Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza has her sights set on a change of rather dramatic change-of-pace, with the actress and comedian on board with the idea of leading a Tomb Raider reboot as Lara Croft. In an interview with Newsweek, Plaza declared that she is open to the idea of becoming the beloved video game character, a suggestion that was spawned following some confusion on the part of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World director Edgar Wright.

"Look, I have no idea what the future holds for me, but I love it. It was so funny when [Wright] texted me that because I didn't realize how strikingly similar those photos are. Emily is carrying a purse strap and Lara Croft has a gun holster, those are very different. But it's very weird and totally accidental, but I'll take it. I love action movies, and I don't discriminate against big movies or small movies. I love all kinds of movies. I would love it if somehow that turned into a real thing, but who knows, I have no idea. That's an iconic character. She's the original badass."

After sharing an image of herself in recent release Emily the Criminal, in which Plaza does look a lot like Lara Croft, Wright sent the actress congratulations over winning the coveted Tomb Raider lead. "My friend, Edgar Wright, actually saw that and texted me and said, 'Oh my god, you're the new Lara Croft? You're the new Tomb Raider?' And I was like, 'No, Edgar, that's my movie Emily the Criminal.' He genuinely thought I was cast as the new Tomb Raider," Plaza explained.

First appearing in the 1996 video game Tomb Raider, Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable in video game history. A British archeologist (can Aubrey Plaza do a British accent?), Croft hops all over the world hunting hidden treasure and, rather aptly, raiding tombs.

MGM Has Now Lost the Rights to Making Tomb Raider Movies

Though Aubrey Plaza has not yet won the role of Lara Croft, it is now not beyond the realm of possibility. While it had been expected that Alicia Vikander would eventually return to the role she first played back in 2018, with the actress herself even stating that a script was “coming in very soon,” the Tomb Raider movie franchise is now expected to be rebooted after MGM has lost the rights to the popular video game franchise.

Last month, it was reported that that MGM has lost the movie rights to Tomb Raider following a bidding war. While the studio had hoped to make a sequel with Vikander back as the title character, they seemingly waited far too long to get things moving, missing the deadline of May 2022 to greenlight the project. With the rights now expired, it will be for another studio to step in and take over, with reports claiming that the plan is likely to be a full reboot with a new cast.

Aubrey Plaza can currently be seen starring in Emily the Criminal, which finds her playing the titular Emily Benetto. Saddled with debt, Emily gets involved in a credit card scam that pulls her into the criminal underworld of Los Angeles. The comedian will also soon reveal whether she has an affinity for action (a necessary requirement for any potential Lara Croft) as she stars alongside Jason Statham in Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.
