It's only been seven years since Moana hit theaters, and soon she'll be back in live-action format, making it the fastest Disney animated classic to get the green light for a remake.

Earlier this year, Dwayne Johnson announced that he would be returning to play the charismatic Maui in the remake of the 2016 film, with all indications that the other original lead, Auli'i Cravalho (Crush), would also return. However, it seems that the plans have changed.

Through a video on her Instagram account, the actress and singer confirmed that she will not be part of the project, at least as an actress, and explain the important reasons behind her decision:

"When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my caree. In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital that casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell. As an executive producer on the film, I cannot wait to help find the next actress to portray Moana's courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength.I am truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent, to honor our incredible Pacific peoples, cultures, and communities that helped inspired her story. And I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representation to come. Mahalo.”

Disney Upcoming Live-Actions Projects

Moana is just one of the many titles that the House of Mouse is preparing to bring back to the big screen. With the release of The Little Mermaid just around the corner, fans are already looking forward to the studio's upcoming adaptations of their animated classics.

One of the most advanced projects in recent months is Lilo & Stitch. The cast of the new version is led by Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Elizabeth Agudong as her sister Nani, and Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen as Jumba and Pleakley, respectively.

Another of those who will come back to life, although in a hybrid between live-action and CGI will be The Aristocats. The 1970 film is considered one of the studio's best musicals, and it will certainly be interesting to revisit the Parisian setting of the time and hear the fun jazz soundtrack again.

The one that will also return in live-action format is Hercules. Helmed by the Russo brothers, the demigod son of Zeus will retell his story in the fun and emotional tone of the Disney animated version, but with the renewed vision and characteristic action of the directors of Avengers: Endgame.

But there are two titles that will be coming to theaters pretty soon. These are Snow White, with Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot as leads, and the prequel of The Lion King, which will follow a young Mufasa. The latter will have the same style as the 2019 remake of the original movie, which was a huge box-office success.
