Film fans are well known for having to be patient when it comes to the release of movie trailers, with Spider-Man: No Way Home famously teasing a trailer arrival for months before it finally arrived to break the internet, and Thor: Love and Thunder performing a similar peek-a-boo trick. One trailer that seems to have set its eyes on a release date is Avatar 2, the first look at the long-awaited follow-up to James Cameron’s ground-breaking 2009 movie, which is reportedly aiming to play ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in theaters this May.

There is very little to say about the sequel to Avatar at the moment as everything about the film is being kept under wraps other than the belief that the film will see humans once again threatening the world of Pandora forcing Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana as Jake Sully and Neytiri respectively to find a new home. As well as its two leads, Avatar 2 will also welcome back Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi and Stephen Long and introduce new characters played by Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh and Cliff Curtis among others.

According to The Ankler, via The Direct, Disney’s big end of year blockbuster will be looking to get some early hype going and with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness expected to be one of the biggest movies of the summer then there would not be a better film to put the trailer out with. If this does turn out to be the case, then fans shouldn’t perhaps expect a full-blown trailer this far in advance, but it would more than likely be a teaser to set the scene and give a few tantalizing glimpses of the action to come from the sequel.

When James Cameron released Avatar in 2009, the film was able to capitalize on the 3D fad that exploded in the movie world around that time, being shot with the latest technology to fully immerse audiences in the world of Pandora and not just have a few random items jump out of the screen. At the time, Avatar was ground-breaking and a one of the kind experience that has seen it continue to hold its title as the highest-grossing movie of all time, despite being temporarily dethroned by Avengers: Endgame.

In a way, Marvel Studios movies and similar big budget, visual spectacles pose a problem for the Avatar sequels, as over a decade on from when James Cameron broke ground with his visual masterpiece, advancements in technology and the virtual demise of the cinematic 3D experience means that Avatar 2 has to rely on the reputation of its predecessor and telling a good story to make it a hit. This time around there is no Real 3D gimmick to boost audience numbers with those curious to see what the experience offers. With Saldana having said that she was moved to tears after watching just 20 minutes of the movie, the creatives behind the film will hope that moviegoers find the same emotional pull when the movie is released in December.
