Director James Cameron has dropped a spoiler for the upcoming Avatar 3, revealing that the narrator of the story will change from human-turned-Na'vi and main protagonist Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) to his second son, Lo’ak. While speaking with the Soundtracking with Edith Bowman podcast, Cameron revealed that he will continue to tweak the threequel depending on what audiences respond from the second movie, with Lo’ak, played in Avatar: The Way of Water by Britain Dalton, already due to take on a much bigger role.

"I'm going to take a moment when the dust clears to assess what people loved and what they responded to the most in this current release, and I may go back and tinker a little bit, and we may go back and do a couple of moments here and there. It won't be radical, but maybe fine-tune it a bit to emphasize that which people are responding to. For example, Lo'ak really emerged as a character that people went with, so I might find ways to ... now, he's already the narrator -- oh, I'm giving away something here ... But this is okay, I think it could be intriguing for people to think about what's coming."

Cameron went on to reveal further insight into his vision for the Avatar sequels, explaining that each new installment will be narrated by a different character.

"Jake was our voiceover narrator for movie one and for movie two, and we have a different narrator for each of the subsequent films. We see it through the eyes of a different character.”

With Avatar: The Way of Water now edging ever closer to the $2 billion-mark, director James Cameron has accepted that, thanks to such monumental success, he will now have to make the rest of the Avatar sequels. The filmmaker has said in the past that, should Avatar: The Way of Water fail to find an audience, he would complete the franchise with a trilogy. But, looking at the box office takings, audiences are clearly ready for far more from the world of Pandora, meaning that Cameron will now helm all five of the planned follow-ups.

"It looks like just with the momentum that the film has now that will easily pass our breakeven in the next few days, actually, so it looks like I can't wiggle out of this, I'm gonna have to do these other these other sequels,” Cameron said of Avatar: The Way of Water’s financial success. “And I'm sure that we'll have a discussion soon, you know, with the top folks that Disney about, you know, the game plan going forward for Avatar 3, which is already in the can we've already captured and photographed the whole film. And then avatar four and five are both written we even have some of four in the can. So you know, I think we can see that that I think we've begun a franchise at this point."

Avatar: The Way of Water tells the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. Avatar: The Way of Water is now in theaters, with three more sequels scheduled. Avatar 3 is currently due for release on December 20, 2024, with further installments scheduled for December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.
