James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has broken records around the world since it was released back in December. However, among its mind-boggling audience numbers, box office receipts, and potential award wins, a new number has been revealed that is almost impossible to comprehend. That is the total number of different versions of the movie that are playing in cinemas, which according to The Hollywood Reporter, is a staggering 1065.

There are obviously not over a thousand different cuts of the movie. Instead, it is the number of versions needed to meet all of the technical requirements demanded of a film playing in every possible format and every available language. According to the report, the number includes a large number of different aspect ratios, as well as frame rates, being required to allow the movie to be played in 4K, HDR, 2D, 3D, IMAX, and more, as well as the versions that require dubbing and hard-coded subtitles for the international market.

The way filmmakers like James Cameron are always looking to push boundaries with their movies, and the constantly changing face of cinema multiplexes, mean that making sure that every cinema can put out a movie is a challenging affair. When it comes to a film like Avatar: The Way of Water, that is even more of a task considering it is in that movie category that every cinema wants to run in as many formats as possible. In two years’ time, Avatar 3 could have even more variants to ensure maximum exposure.

As the highest-grossing movie since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, and the third highest-grossing of all-time, Avatar: The Way of Water has been helped along with its $2 billion-plus box office haul by being a big draw in 3D screenings and IMAX, as well as being given a coveted release in China. However, the vast number of different versions created will have also added a fair amount of cost to the movie's production.

Thankfully for all involved, Avatar: The Way of Water has managed to offset its colossal budget during its theatrical run and then some. In addition, the film has yet to hit digital markets, where it will continue to pull in additional profit. With James Cameron having already shot Avatar 3 and heading into post-production, the Avatar gamble has already paid off and paved the way for all of Cameron’s proposed sequels to roll out over the next several years.

Whether the franchise can continue to make waves with the following three sequels is something that we will only find out in time. However, considering more than a decade between Avatar and its sequel couldn’t quench the thirst for most stories of Pandora and the Na’vi, it is unlikely that any Avatar project will find itself struggling to find an audience in any and every possible format it plays in.
