Captain America: Civil War is the highest grossing movie of 2016 and rounded out one of the best trilogies in modern cinema. Unfortunately, Chris Evans can't play Captain America forever, but Marvel may have a plan in place, which Sebastian Stan might be teasing us with. Is Bucky going to be taking over for Steve Rogers as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point?

The actor recently made a post to his Instagram which featured him holding an Captain America shield on his back. The shield was made for him by Casey McBroom who works for a company named Shield Labs, who makes "cool stuff for cooler people." Here is what Sebastian Stan had to say about the picture in his post.

"Excuse me...where's the restroom?" A big thank you and shout out to Casey McBroom@shield_labs for making this for me. Will come in handy... #wintersoldier #marvel"

Given the somewhat jokey caption that Sebastian Stan provided with the picture, it is hard to take this overly seriously, but he did say that it will "come in handy." Captain America's shield is pretty handy, as we have seen quite often in the MCU up to this point, so that isn't exactly a revelation on its own. But could this be a light tease to a long-standing future MCU theory? Sebastian Stan could very well pick up the shield and the Captain America title after Chris Evans leaves the MCU. It happened in the comics, so why not on the big screen? It would certainly be a more likable way for Marvel to go about it than straight-up recasting the role of Steve Rogers.

Following The Death of Captain America storyline in the comics, Bucky Barnes took up the mantle of Captain America in 2008 for a short while. The theory that Sebastian Stan would ultimately wind up doing this in the MCU started being thrown around when The Winter Soldier storyline was announced and has persisted since. We don't know what is going to happen in Avengers: Infinity War, but we can safely assume that not all of The Avengers are going to make it out alive. If Steve Rogers does bite the dust, Bucky could be right there to make sure Captain America lives on.

Plus, let's add in the fact that shortly after Civil War debuted in theaters, Kevin Feige confirmed that Steve Rogers has officially given up the shield and quit being Captain America. Who knows what this means right now as far as the MCU is concerned. For all we know, Infinity War could kick off with a new Captain America already in place.

Spoilers if you haven't seen Captain America: Civil War, but at the moment Bucky is back on ice in Wakanda under the watchful eye of Black Panther until they can find a way to get his head right. Surely they will manage to do that before Thanos comes to town, because they could use the help of another super soldier. There was also a period more recently where Falcon took up the Captain America mantle in the comics, so if Bucky doesn't step up, maybe Anthony Mackie has already stepped in? In truth, this picture was probably just a way for Sebastian Stan to say thank you to Shield Labs and give a little something for his many Marvel fans to look at. But we certainly can't rule out the possibility of this happening in the future, and this just adds some fuel to the fire. You can check out the picture for yourself below.
