It was officially announced last week by Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo that Steve Rogers is giving up the shield in Avengers 3. When this happened in the comic books, both the Winter Solider and Falcon assumed Cap's superhero identity. Many believe it will be Bucky Barnes who picks up the red, white and blue mantle moving forward in the MCU. Now, we know what that might look like.
Fan art extraordinaire Boss Logic has come through once again with images that depict Bucky in the star spangle costume usually worn by Steve Rogers. There are three variations on this look. The first is the most traditional, while the second image lets the Avenger go unmask. The third image gives us a fine mix of Captain America's signature look with the Winter Solider's iconic movie costume first seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
At the end of Civil War, after the epic one-on-one fight between Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) Cap drops his iconic shield, and we never see him pick it up again. The Russo Brothers have confirmed that Steve Rogers is dropping the Captain America identity altogether. Here's what Joe Russo had to say below.
"I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity. [It's] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making."
Just because Steve Rogers isn't Captain America anymore, doesn't mean we won't see him in Infinity War. Writer Christopher Markus teased that Steve Rogers will still be "helpful" in taking down the "big purple guy" who's coming, Thanos (Josh Brolin), while the Huffington Post speculates that Steve Rogers could turn into The Nomad, which happens in the Marvel Comics after Cap becomes disillusioned with the government, which certainly happened in Civil War. It isn't known at this point if Falcon or Bucky Barnes will become Captain America in the MCU. But these images help offer a hint as to what that might look like.
