As expansive and enormous as the Marvel Cinematic Universe is, there is one character, who hasn't even debuted on the big screen yet, that fans keep talking about. Earlier this summer, Anna Kendrick revealed on Twitter that her brother wants her to pay Squirrel Girl in the MCU. Of course, as far as we know, the actress hasn't engaged in any talks with Marvel to play the role, but Avengers: Infinity War directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo did recently tease that the Great Lakes Avengers, a group Squirrel Girl belonged to, may surface in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Now the directors have come out and said that Anna Kendrick would in fact make the perfect Squirrel Girl, but we don't know for sure if she's coming to the big screen or not.
Shortly after Anna Kendrick first spoke about Squirrel Girl, an artist revealed what the actress might look like as this character. Director Edgar Wright, who worked with Anna Kendrick on Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, also revealed that Marvel should give the actress her own Squirrel Girl movie. Yahoo! Movies caught up with the Russo Brothers, who were asked specifically if they'd like to see Anna Kendrick as Squirrel Girl. Here's what they had to say.
"It would be perfect casting, and we're huge Anna Kendrick fans."
We recently reported that Stranger Things star Shannon Purser, who plays Barb on the hit Netflix series, expressed her interest in the role as well. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that Squirrel Girl will be seen on the big screen in Infinity War. Anthony Russo revealed that they both have their "hands full" trying to tell this story with the massive amount of characters they already have, with Joe Russo teasing that his brother would "die from exhaustion" if a new character was introduced. However, Anthony Russo responded with this statement.
"That's not to say we're not going to introduce a new character."
When asked if that new character may be Captain Marvel, Anthony Russo joked that they may add this unknown character, if Marvel "ever casts that role." Of course, the studio confirmed at Comic-Con that Brie Larson will star as Captain Marvel, but just a few months earlier, while promoting Captain America: Civil War, the directors let it slip that Captain Marvel would be introduced in this movie, which hits theaters in May 2018, before the stand alone Captain Marvel movie arrives in March 2019. They did add that they'd have to "plead the 5th" on bringing Captain Marvel into the movie.
The directors made headlines earlier this year, when they revealed there would be upwards of 67 characters featured in Avengers: Infinity War, which they later clarified wasn't the exact count. When asked if they had pared down that total at all, Joe Russo revealed that the actor who played S.H.I.E.L.D. surgeon Dr. Fine in Captain America: The Winter Soldier won't be coming back, because he "wanted too much money." That "actor" in question was none other than Joe Russo. We'll be sure to keep you posted with more on Avengers: Infinity War, which starts filming this November.
