The Marvel Cinematic Universe is always evolving and changing, and in just a few weeks, fans will finally get to see a more mystical side to the MCU when Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4. Phase 3 will culminate with Avengers: Infinity War and the currently untitled Avengers Sequel. During a press conference for Doctor Strange, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased that a comic book group dubbed the Illuminati may be formed in the MCU very soon.

Kevin Feige was part of a press conference that Marvel held today at the Doctor Strange junket, where he dropped a surprising revelation that the Illuminati characters will come together in Avengers: Infinity War. While he didn't mention any specific characters, Doctor Strange is a key member of the Illuminati in the comics, along with Iron Man, which could mean that Robert Downey Jr.'s beloved character may join forces with Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange. Here's what Kevin Feige had to say below.

"What's fun about the Illuminati is seeing certain characters interact with certain other characters. I don't know about that particular storyline, but some of those characters we'll be seeing together onscreen in the next Avengers."

The Illuminati first debuted in New Avengers #7, written by Brian Michael Bendis and Steven McNiven back in 2005. The Illuminati was a secret society comprised of Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Namor, Mr. Fantastic from Fantastic Four, Professor Charles Xavier from X-Men and Inhumans' Black Bolt. Since Marvel Studios doesn't control the rights to most of these characters, many have assumed that Kevin Feige's comments could mean that Doctor Strange and Iron Man could come together during Infinity War. While he wouldn't offer more details on the Illuminati, Kevin Feige confirmed when Benedict Cumberbatch starts shooting Avengers: Infinity War.

"We're taking it one step at a time. Benedict puts on the cloak once again early next year in Infinity War."

Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are directing Avengers: Infinity War from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. We have previously reported that production starts on Avengers: Infinity War in November, with the studio shooting both Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled Avengers Sequel back-to-back over a nine-month stretch. Hopefully we'll get more details about the Illuminati in Avengers: Infinity War soon.
