It's official: Bad Boys 4 is happening. There have been rumors and reports in recent years about a fourth installment of the action movie series reuniting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence for another adventure as detectives Mike Lowrey and Miles Burnett. After Smith's infamous Oscars slap scandal that happened last year, it was rumored that the film could be scrapped as a result, but more recent rumors had suggested that the sequel was still on track.

Now, straight from Smith and Lawrence themselves, the sequel has been made official. On Instagram, Smith shared a video of himself en route to reveal a surprise for his followers, not saying at first what he was up to. He comes upon a home, and none other than Lawrence greets him at the front door. The two actors excitedly embrace as they address to the camera that Bad Boys 4 is definitely happening, though they're starting to wish they would have saved the Bad Boys for Life title for this new installment.

"It's official, y'all," Smith says in the footage. "Bad Boys for life, baby! For life!"

Pointing out the title of the third film, Lawrence objected, "But we did For Life... but, it's still Bad Boys for life!"

"We shouldn't have called it that, though," Smith says, amused. "But, this is Bad Boys 4, it's official."

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer had teased that positive news was coming for Bad Boys 4 last month. While noting that the sequel with the two lead stars returning wasn't set in stone as of that time, Bruckheimer noted in a THR interview that his hope was for Smith to come back so the movie can get made. His thinking is that the audience will be able to forgive him despite the mistake he made at the Oscars last year.

"Absolutely [Will can come back]," Bruckheimer said when asked about Smith's potential return. "I mean, Will made a mistake, unfortunately. That's not who he is. He's a phenomenal actor and there's always forgiveness in the world. And hopefully, the audience will forgive him."

Bad Boys 4 does not yet have a release date and it's unclear when filming will begin, but with Smith and Lawrence reuniting, production must be happening soon. Meanwhile, fans of Smith can check out his latest performance in the Apple TV+ movie Emancipation, which comes from Training Day helmer Antoine Fuqua and has garnered critical praise for the actor.
