17-year-old transgender filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay, fresh off her feature film debut, So Vam, will next tackle the slasher genre with her next horror movie, Bad Girl Boogey. According to Fangoria, the film will premiere at the Popcorn Frights Film Festival, which is scheduled to run from August 11th to 21st in Florida. Other films premiering during the month at the festival are Compulsus, Final Summer, and Honeycomb. Mackay said:

“Such an honor to be premiering Bad Girl Boogey at this festival, alongside such an amazing line-up. Bad Girl Boogey is a culmination of hard work and dedication by all involved. I’m so proud to be presenting a film that is so authentically queer on screen and behind the scenes. While also hopefully being a gory, gritty, and sometimes fun take of the slasher sub-genre."

The official synopsis of the film is as follows:

“One Halloween, blood was shed by the wearer of a parasitic mask cursed with black magic and bigotry. Sixteen years later, when Angel’s best friend is slaughtered by a killer with the same mask, they must overcome their personal struggles, fight their fear, and find the masked killer before he, or it, slaughters everyone they hold dear.”

It sounds like the plot will have a few things in common with You Might Be the Killer. (spoiler warning) That film concerns a camp counselor named Sam (Fran Kranz), who, with help from his friend Chuck (Alyson Hannigan), discovers that he is, in fact, the killer, possessed by a cursed woodcutter mask. Of course, Bad Girl Boogey seems primed to be more socially conscious. (spoiler warning)

What’s to Come

A voiceover in the teaser played by Bill Moseley, known to horror fans for his performances as Chop Top Sawyer and Otis B. Driftwood, states:

“Alright, you creepy f***ers. Having a good time tonight? G*ddamn, did you see the news? Masked killer on the loose in the streets of our shithole town. Killing kids, slaughtering them like lambs. Jesus suffering f***, it’s like a horror movie out there."

Indeed, the trailer only offers fleeting images of what’s to come, it does show a masked figure getting up to the sort of antics you would expect to find in a slasher movie. Beyond that, we also have various snippets of some sort of concert where the people are dancing. We also catch a glimpse of someone sprinkling salt into a pentagram, presumably for an occult ritual.

According to IMDb, the role of Angel will be played by Lisa Fanto. At the end of the teaser trailer, we see Angel speaking to a currently unknown figure of authority. They tell whoever it is that there speaking to that “you could have stopped it when it was happening on your watch. Well, it’s out watch now. My watch.”

Bad Girl Boogey will premiere on Sunday, August 21st at 3 pm in The ALTER Screening Room at the O Cinema South Beach. It will also be available virtually for those residing within the United States. You can get your tickets to the event here. Popcorn Frights also offers an all-access badge as well as virtual passes, are available as well.
