The BAFTA Nominees for 2023 have now been announced, with Edward Berger’s epic anti-war movie All Quiet on the Western Front leading the pack with a total of 14 nominations, including Best Film and Best Director for Berger. The rest of the nominations include the likes of Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, and Tár.
The nominees were officially announced by Marvel star Hayley Atwell and Ted Lasso actor Toheeb Jimoh during a live press conference. The 14 nominations for All Quiet on the Western Front equaled the record set back in 2000 by director Ang Lee’s sweeping martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Directed by Edward Berger and starring Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl, Sebastian Hülk, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic, and Devid Striesow, All Quiet on the Western Front is a remake of the 1930 movie of the same name, both of which are adaptations of the powerful 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque.
All Quiet on the Western Front begins with war breaking out in Germany in 1914 and follows an idealistic young German soldier named Paul Bäumer and his classmates who quickly enlist in the army to serve their fatherland. No sooner are they drafted than the first images from the battlefield show them the reality of war. The recent retelling, which landed on Netflix in October, has been met with rave reviews from critics who have described All Quiet on the Western Front as both “timely and timeless.”
Everything Everywhere All at Once Receives 10 BAFTA Nominations
