Following the spectacular and very final ending to Daniel Craig’s time as James Bond, it was pretty apparent that producer Barbara Broccoli had no intentions of rushing straight on to the next actor play the iconic role. Now the long-time Bond producer has said it will be “at least two years” before another Bond movie will set cameras rolling, meaning it will likely be 2025 at the earliest before we see the next iteration of the superspy make his debut.

Broccoli and her brother Michael G. Wilson were attending a private event in London, which was in honor of the pair’s BFI Fellowships. Now that the dust has settled on Daniel Craig’s shocking ending to his tenure as Bond, many believed there would soon be word on who of the hot favorite actors would be next in line for the roll. Broccoli, however, made it clear that for now, there are no favorites as nothing at all has been decided about how Bond will look in the future. Deadline reported Broccoli as saying:

“Nobody’s in the running. We’re working out where to go with him, we’re talking that through. There isn’t a script and we can’t come up with one until we decide how we’re going to approach the next film because, really, it’s a reinvention of Bond. We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time. I’d say that filming is at least two years away.”

When Daniel Craig’s final Bond movie No Time to Die finally arrived in cinemas last year after a lengthy delay, the film appeared to be worth the wait. As the first film in 60 years to do the unthinkable and actually kill off James Bond, it was clear that whatever comes next for the franchise will not be the regular changing of the guard type of hand over. While Broccoli has on many occasions remained resolute that James Bond will always remain a male character, that does not mean that there won’t be a lot of changes to the new iteration of the cinematic icon.

Although there have been a lot of names thrown in to the hat as to who will be taking over the role, many of those who have been hotly tipped to step into Bond’s suave shoes are probably not in with a chance, especially if the character is being reinvented. This sounds more of a complete change in persona or age or attitude from the middle-aged, well-worn spy that we have been used to seeing recently. This could mean something along the lines of The Batman, which sent the crime fighting hero back to his early years as a vigilante. It could be time for Bond’s past to come into play with a younger iteration than we are used to seeing.

However things turn out, it is clear that the new James Bond is not going to be treading the same path as his predecessors, and as Barbara Broccoli says, that kind of total overhaul is not something that can be done overnight.
