The release of The Batman: The Official Script Book has sent Batgirl fans into a frenzy after it revealed a deleted scene in which Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon is heard to name-check his daughter Barbara during a phone call. This immediately had fans of the canceled DCU Batgirl movie calling for Leslie Grace to be cast in the role for The Batman 2 so she can finally become Batgirl on the big screen.

Batgirl was originally meant to be released as part of the DCU, with Leslie Grace in the title role and Brendan Fraser playing the villain, Firefly. In addition to this, the movie would have also seen the return of Michael Keaton as Batman and J.K. Simmons as Jim Gordon. The movie was virtually complete when Warner Bros. Discovery decided to pull the plug on the film, along with a number of other already green it projects. Fans instantly rallied against the crushing blow, but it was made clear that the studio would love to work with Grace in future. Now many fans are hoping that will be as a part of The Batman universe.

Although it would be great for Grace to be able to finally get to play the role of Barbara Gordon, there is currently no details on whether The Batman 2 or one of its upcoming spin-offs will feature the character. If it did, then it would certainly be a different version to the one that Grace was set to play in the DCU. For that reason, there is a definite question mark over whether Grace would even be a contender for the part if it did happen, but that hasn’t stopped many fans demanding her casting on Twitter.

Matt Reeves is crafting a well-rounded Batman universe, and even though the mention of Barbara Gordon was only in a deleted scene, that doesn’t either confirm or debunk whether she will feature in the future of the franchise. With so many other aspects of Batman’s world in place, and Jim Gordon’s daughter clearly old enough to be calling her father for whatever unknown reason, Matt Reeves could look to bring Batgirl into a future project in the universe, but the real question will be how having Batgirl in the franchise would enhance the story.

The Batman is a much more grounded version of the DC hero, focussing on his detective origins instead of flashy gadgets and superhero adventures. Bruce Wayne’s alter ego spends a lot of The Batman working alongside Jim Gordon, almost as part of the Gotham PD. With the pair having such a close working relationship, bringing Barbara Gordon into the story could end up adding a third wheel where it is not really needed.

However, Matt Reeves’ plans for the future of The Batman are still to really be announced beyond the Penguin spin-off and the proposed Arkham Asylum series. Batgirl and many other characters could be set to make an appearance some time in the future, but as to whether fans will get their dream casting is another matter entirely.
