Back in 2014, a rumor surfaced that Idris Elba was being sought to play the new James Bond, after Daniel Craig leaves the 007 franchise. While it has never been confirmed that Sony and MGM have been considering Idris Elba to take over as the iconic secret agent, fans will get to see the actor display his spy skills in a new action-thriller entitled Bastille Day. StudioCanal UK has released a new international trailer featuring the first action-packed footage.

The story centers on Michael Mason (Richard Madden, Game of Thrones), an American pickpocket living in Paris who finds himself in the hands of the CIA when he steals a bag that contains more than just a wallet. Sean Briar (Idris Elba, Avengers: Age of Ultron), the field agent on the case, soon realizes that Michael is just a pawn in a much bigger game and is also his best asset to uncover a large-scale criminal conspiracy in the heart of the police force. Going against commands, Briar recruits Michael to help quickly track down the source of the corruption.

As a 24-hour chase ensues, the unlikely duo discover they are both targets and must rely upon each other in order to take down a common enemy. The supporting cast is rounded out by Kelly Reilly, Charlotte Le Bon and Anatol Yusef, with StudioCanal setting a U.K. release date for April 22, with the film arriving a bit earlier in Belgium (March 16) and Germany (March 17). The project doesn't have a domestic release date at this time, but we'll keep you posted with any updates.

James Watkins (The Woman in Black) directs from a script by Andrew Baldwin, who is also writing the currently-untitled sequel to 2012's The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner. Idris Elba signed on to star in this project back in 2013, with Focus Features picking up the project back in 2014. Philippe Rousselet is producing the project via his Vendome Pictures banner, along with Steve Golin, David Kanter, and Bard Dorros for Anonymous Content.

While it may be quite some time before fans get their wish of Idris Elba playing 007, we can still see the actor's action chops in the trailer for Bastille Day.
