James Gunn shared a new Blue Beetle poster this week and was instantly bombarded with fans petitioning the new DC Studio head to save the canceled Batgirl movie. The loss of the Batgirl movie is still the biggest sting for many DC fans from the lengthy list of shows and potential movies scrapped by Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this year. Therefore, fans will take any opportunity to make their voices heard, and Gunn sharing the new Blue Beetle poster was such a chance.

Among the many comments made on the back of the post, fans particularly noted that they want to see Brendan Fraser’s Firefly as well as Leslie Grace as the titular heroine. However, the continued barrage of requests seems to have continued to fall on deaf ears, and it is surely only a matter of time before they realize that the Batgirl project is not going to rise from the ashes as part of the new DCU picture.

At the time of Batgirl’s cancelation, the first of many DC projects to be shelved, a statement by Warner Bros. Discovery put the scrapping of the movie down to a change of strategy when it comes to the studio’s release schedules. They wrote:

"The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership's strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future."

Batgirl Was Set to Become Part of Brendan Fraser’s Comeback

Among the many reasons that fans wanted to see Batgirl released, the inclusion of Brendan Fraser as the movie’s villain was high on the list. As Firefly, Fraser was set to take on a completely new type of role, and one that would have formed part of the actor’s Hollywood comeback. Speaking about the cancelation, Fraser previously said:

“It’s tragic. It doesn’t engender trust among filmmakers and the studio. Leslie Grace was fantastic. She’s a dynamo, just a spot-on performer. Everything that we shot was real and exciting and just the antithesis of doing a straightforward digital all green screen thing. They ran firetrucks around downtown Glasgow at 3 in the morning and they had flamethrowers. It was a big-budget movie, but one that was just stripped down to the essentials.”

Thankfully for Fraser’s fans, Batgirl is not his only movie project, and his performance in The Whale has given plenty for them to praise the actor for. With a lot of Oscar buzz around that movie, and several other roles lined up, Batgirl’s cancelation was not a huge blow to Fraser’s comeback. However, that doesn’t mean that his role as Firefly is one that fans are going to easily forget.
