HBO Max’s Batgirl movie is shaping up to be an unexpected attention grabber for the streaming platform, with connections to the DCEU, the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman, Brendan Fraser’s Firefly, and J.K. Simmons reprising his Justice League role of Commissioner Gordon. Since we have already seen set photos and videos featuring Leslie Grace’s Barbara Gordon and Fraser’s villain, it is only fitting that Simmons should have his turn, and the latest round of set images have given a look at the returning fan-favorite, fresh off his Marvel roles J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The Batgirl movie has been filming for the last month in Scotland. There have been plenty of leaks circulating on social media for fans to get a good look at the main players of the movie, from Leslie Grace escaping a burning warehouse and roughing up some criminals to a mural depicting Michael Keaton’s Batman with a Robin sidekick. Now it is the turn of J.K. Simmons to take the stage in images that were shared on Instagram by labatcuevadegeorge. The scene in question appears to be a flashback sequence, judging by Simmons’ Gordon not having a white mustache and hair, and features him with his wife and a young girl who must be a young Barbara Gordon.

It is Still Not Clear Where Batgirl Will Sit in Relation to the Existing DCEU Movies

While we know a few things about the Batgirl movie, the new images of a younger Gordon don’t really help piece together where the film will sit in relation to some aspects of the previous DCEU movies, such as Justice League. The photos don’t give much context as to why the flashback is included or where in the film it will feature, but what it does make interesting is how Gordon will connect to Michael Keaton’s Batman. Simmons himself has already hinted that this will be a different version of Gordon to who was previously seen, which just adds more mystery to it all.

Batgirl is expected to arrive on HBO Max sometime towards the end of the year, around the same time The Flash will be released in cinemas. With Michael Keaton reprising his Batman role in both movies, there is little doubt that they will be connected in some way, but the real question is which takes place first? So far in the DCEU narrative, J.K. Simmons has only appeared alongside Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne, so to have him appearing in a movie with Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader is going to need a little bit of explaining one way or another.

While some rumors are suggesting that The Flash will act as some kind of rest of the DCEU, and will see the death of Ben Affleck’s Batman and thanks to some multiverse crossovers, the arrival of Keaton’s Bat in the DCEU world. Although that could potentially explain a lot of the mystery straight away, the only problem is that currently, The Flash will not be released until after Batgirl, but as we know, these things are always subject to change. For now, we can sit back and wait for more information on the movie as the shoot heads towards its close soon.
