Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice does not have the staying power previous blockbusters such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Deadpool have experienced in recent months. Heck, it's not even doing as well in its second weekend as the animated Disney hit Zootopia. And this does not bode well for the DCEU.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earned just $15.4 million dollars at the domestic box office on its second Friday in release. The movie is currently screening in 4,256 theaters. So far, it has racked up $224.4 million, which would be very impressive for a lesser movie. But this is Warner Bros.' big shot at not only setting up the Justice League but all of the DCEU spinoffs that come with it. In comparison, Batman v Superman earned $81.6 million last Friday, including $27.7 million from Thursday Night previews. Even without the Thursday numbers, we're looking at a drastic 70% drop from last weekend to this weekend, with $53.9 million vs $15.4 million.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is expected to earn a little over $50 million by the time Monday rolls around. That's compared to last weekend's take of $166.1 million in its debut. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice isn't alone when it comes to big second weekend drop offs. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 experienced a 72% drop off in its second weekend. And The Twilight Saga: New Moon plummeted by 70%.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is still kicking up dust at the international box office. It took in an additional $19.2 million at various locations around the world on Friday. This brings its overseas tally to $363.4 million. Thus far, the movie has a global cum of $587.8 million. It is currently the third biggest release of the year behind Zootopia, which is sitting pretty with $261.5 million domestically and $727 million worldwide. And Deadpool still rests at number one with $352.6 million domestic, $747.4 worldwide.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is budgeted at $250 million before promotional costs, with the total rumored to be over $400 million. The movie is said to have to break $1 billion before Warner Bros. will see profit. With a 70% drop off in its second weekend, that doesn't bode well for its third weekend out of the gate. Though, it will likely take the #1 spot on the box office charts both this weekend, with it going up against God's Not Dead 2 and Meet the Blacks, which are both in a limited amount of theaters, and next weekend, where it only faces the thriller Before I Wake, Relativity's first movie to come out following their bankruptcy proceedings, Universal's new comedy movie The Boss and STX Entertainment's Hardcore Henry.
We can look for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to start dropping out of the top five in its forth weekend of release. Then, it will have to face off against Disney's The Jungle Book and the long-awaited sequel Barbershop: The Next Cut, both of which are executed to be huge hits. So, what do you think? Did you go see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in its second weekend of release? Or are you just so over it already?
