Though it has been rumored for quite sometime, today we get official confirmation from DC All Access that actress Tao Okamoto is playing Mercy Graves in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The character was originally created for Superman: The Animated series back in 1996. And this is the first time she has been seen on the big screen. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad has similar origins. Instead of springing forth from a comic book, she was created for the Batman animated series back in 1992.
Tao Okamoto was personally selected by director Zack Snyder for the role after her appearance in The Wolverine. The character can be seen in the second Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer as she leads the dead body of super villain Zod through Lex Corp Industries, a hold over from Man of Steel. Early in the production process, Warner Bros. claimed that Tao Okamoto was playing an original character created specifically for the movie. While that is no longer the case, Holly Hunter is playing a brand new character. Though she hasn't been given a name, the actress plays a senator obsessed with prosecuting Superman for his crimes against Metropoils.
Mercy Graves has been rumored to appear in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice since the production first got underway in 2013. The character is usually depicted as Lex Luthor's bodyguard and assistant, with Tao Okamoto sharing most of her screen time with co-star Jesse Eisenberg. Lisa Edelstein originated the character, who was later brought into the DC Comics continuity. Cassidy Freeman's Smallville character Tess Mercer was a combination of Mercy Graves and the 1978 Superman movie character Eve Tessmacher, played by Valerie Perrine. Graves, Mercer and Tessmacher have all served under Lex Luthor in some capacity.
Tao Okamoto is best remembered for her role as Mariko in 2013's The Wolverine. She has also been playing an important role in Hannibal Season 3 as that NBC series comes to a close. It is not clear yet how big or important her role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is. The film, which pits two of DC Comics most iconic characters against each other has more iconic DC characters than any movie before it. So it's not known how much screen time each of these characters will get.
Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City's own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis's most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it's ever known before. Will the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel be able to put aside their differences and fight evil together? We sure hope so!
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice features Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent/Superman, with Ben Affleck introduced as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also features Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, the first time this character has ever been seen on the big screen. Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane are returning from Man of Steel. Newcomers include Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and Holly Hunter in a role newly created for the film, playing a senator who wants Superman to be held responsible for his destructive behavior. Jason Momoa will also be making an appearance as Aquaman. Directed by Zack Snyder, written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer, the film is produced by Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceis set to open worldwide on March 25, 2016. We've included the trailer and a screen grab of Tao Okamoto. Take a look!
