It was recently announced that Javicia Leslie will be taking over the role of Batwoman on her CW show after season 1 lead Ruby Rose stepped away from the series citing personal issues. Leslie, who appeared in two seasons of God Friended Me as Ali Finer, and whose past credits include Always a Bridesmaid, The Family Business, MacGyver, and Chef Julian, was welcomed to the Batwoman family by Rose on Instagram.

"OMG!! This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. [Heart] I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can't wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing !!"

With the post, Ruby Rose put to rest the rumors circulating around the web of bad blood between the actress and the Batwoman production team which led to her departure. For her part, Leslie has also issued a statement expressing her excitement over donning the mantle of the Bat.

"I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community."

Batwoman tells the tale of Kate Kane, cousin of Bruce Wayne, who takes up the mantle of the Bat in the absence of Bruce. Season 1 dealt with Kate's struggles against her arch-enemy Alice, who turns out to be her long-lost twin sister Beth.

Following Rose's somewhat abrupt departure from the series, season 2 of Batwoman will take the show in a new direction, with Leslie as the lead, who is not playing a different version of Kate, but a new addition to the cast. Named Ryan Wilder, her official bio makes it clear that the character is a very different person from Kate Kane.

"Ryan Wilder is about to become Batwoman. She's likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She's also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical all-American hero."

It will be interesting to see how Leslie plans to make the role her own, and whether fans will be willing to accept a new character wearing the Batcowl. Batwoman is expected to return to The CW in Jan. 2021. The show stars Javicia Leslie, Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Dougray Scott and Nicole Kang. The series airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
