Reno 911! co-creator/star Robert Ben Garant has signed on to direct Baywatch for Paramount Pictures.

We last reported on this project just over a year ago, when Rescue Me creator Peter Tolan signed on to rewrite the script. The writer revealed that this theatrical endeavor, "is not based on the show in any way, though there are a couple of winks at the show." No story details have been confirmed at this time.

Paramount has been developing this project since 2009, when Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up) was attached to write and direct. Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood (The Sitter), were later brought on to rework the script before Peter Tolan came aboard. Ivan Reitman is still on board to produce.

The TV series Baywatch ran for 11 seasons between 1989 and 2000, making Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff global superstars.
