Warner Bros. has beat out CBS Films in a bidding war for the Jamie McGuire novel Beautiful Disaster, described as a young adult version of Fifty Shades of Grey.
The story centers on the straight-laced college student Abby Abernathy, who abstains from drinking and cursing. She makes an unusual bet with collegiate bad boy Travis Maddox, described as, "lean, cut, and covered in tattoos." If Abby wins the bet, Travis must abstain from having sex for a month. If Travis wins, Abby must live with him for a month. The property is seen as a safer bet than the raunchy Fifty Shades of Grey.
Donald De Line will produce the adaptation for Warner Bros., although no screenwriter has been attached yet. Beautiful Disaster, like Fifty Shades of Grey, also started as an eBook, with the author self-publishing through Amazon's CreateSpace. The book has sold more than 200,000 copies in its current form. Atria, a division of Simon & Schuster, will release a paperback version of the novel August 14.
