Beauty and the Beast Blu-rayWhenever Disney unlocks their vault and brings out a classic title, any other new release doesn't stand a chance on the home video charts, as demonstrated this week with Beauty and the Beast topping the DVD and Blu-ray sales charts, despite only being released as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.
The Hollywood Reporter has the news, which is somewhat surprising given the premium price tag put on this animated classic's new Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD set. Still, it had no problem topping last week's winner, Iron Man 2, which sold about 70% as many units as Beauty and the Beast.
The only two notable new releases this week were The Karate Kid and A Nightmare on Elm Street, which took third and fourth place, respectively, on the DVD sales charts. The Karate Kid did come away with a win on the DVD rental charts, though, with Iron Man 2 in second place and Marmaduke in third place, after its sixth place rental finish last week. It was said that the animated movie made the jump because it was recently made available on Netflix and Redbox.
On the Blu-ray charts, the top four in DVD sales finished in the same order - Beauty and the Beast, Iron Man 2, The Karate Kid and A Nightmare on Elm Street - although Iron Man 2's BD sales dropped significantly. Last week, when it swept all three charts, a whopping 52% of all Iron Man 2 sales were in the BD format, whereas this week, only 10% of all units sold were in 1080p.
