Ben Affleck had a rocky start to his time as Batman, and it almost didn’t end much better. While the actor has been warmed to by many fans over the years, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor discussed a number of topics and touched on how Justice League somehow managed to go from being a complete abomination to one of his highest rated movies on IMDb. Affleck reminisced:

“Justice League … You could teach a seminar on all the reasons why this is how not to do it. Ranging from production to bad decisions to horrible personal tragedy, and just ending with the most monstrous taste in my mouth. The genius, and the silver lining, is that Zack Snyder eventually went to AT&T and was like, “Look, I can get you four hours of content.” And it’s principally just all the slow motion that he shot in black-and-white. And one day of shooting with me and him. He was like, “Do you want to come shoot in my backyard?” I was like, “I think there are unions, Zack. I think we have to make a deal.” But I went and did it. And now [Zack Snyder’s Justice League] is my highest-rated movie on IMDb.”

It is not unfair to say that Justice League was a victim of circumstance, and the real-life tragedy that caused Zack Snyder to hand the project over to Joss Whedon certainly meant that the film was always going to have problems with consistency and tone. While it was good for Snyder to get the chance to deliver his complete vision for Justice League in his four-hour cut, it was clear that the movie was simply the closing of a chapter and nothing more.

Although Ben Affleck’s time as Batman seemed to be over with the original version of the Justice League, his return for Zack Snyder’s cut of the movie gave hope that he would be donning the cape and cowl once again. It seems that those hopes are coming true in a small way.

This year, Affleck will be back as one of the Batmen to appear in The Flash, the Ezra Miller-led universe-rebooting movie that has already been hailed as one of the best movies of the entire DCEU. While there has been much hype around the film also starring Michael Keaton as an older version of his Batman, the inclusion of Affleck also has been the subject of many trending topics online. However, Affleck has revealed that he doesn’t have a very large part in the movie. He said:

“Yeah, I did finally figure out how to play that character [Batman], and I nailed it in The Flash. For the five minutes I’m there, it’s really great. A lot of it’s just tone. You’ve got to figure out, what’s your version of the person? Who is the guy that fits what you can do? I tried to fit myself into a Batman.”

While this could be disappointing for Affleck’s fans, there is also a strong rumor that he will make another brief appearance in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom at the end of the year. Whatever the truth of that cameo, it is clear that this year will bring the old DCEU to an end, and Affleck will be seemingly coming to the end of his road as Batman as well.
