There are certain characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that immediately connect with audiences, and one of those is Doctor Strange’s Wong, played by Benedict Wong. Ever since he was seen enjoying a bit of Beyonce in 2016’s Doctor Strange while books were being stolen from around him, the character of Wong has been the perfect partner to Benedict Cumberbatch’s over-confident and sarcastic sorcerer. Despite being mainly associated with Doctor Strange, Wong has appeared in six entries of the franchise, including last year’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now fans are calling for Wong to get his own Disney+ series, and that is something Benedict Wong could really get on board with.

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wong is back helping Strange, and as the current Sorcerer Supreme, a title he took over following the dusting of the Doctor in Avengers: Infinity War, he can be quite a formidable force to be reckoned with. With so much about Wong and his mystical world at Kamar Taj, it is no wonder that there could be a lot of interest in a new series focusing on the character and what he does when not tagging along to save the world with Doctor Strange. Wong told The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon:

“I'd love it, I'd love it... You know, what happened to Wong during the Infinity War, you know there's a five-year period we could start with... Well, he took a deep breath, because it was pretty full-on out there, wasn't it? Training his students at Kamar Taj...”

Wong Is A Big Part of the MCU, So a Disney+ Series Could Work

Marvel Studios

When it comes to many of the first Disney+ Marvel shows, the content has seemingly been about developing characters in ways that have not been possible in the movies they have appeared in. From Wanda’s story in WandaVision, which essentially fills in the missing piece between Avengers: Endgame and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, to the creation of a new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and more, Disney+ is a great way of giving good characters space to breathe. That could make a Wong series a perfect way to further enhance the character from much-loved sidekick to lead star.

With many different aspects of the Marvel world coming into play, like the supernatural path of Moon Knight, Blade and Werewolf By Night, the gritty action of Hawkeye and Echo, and the cosmic worlds explored by Eternals, a Wong series could well link to both the world of the Mystic Arts and also the world of Shang-Chi, which Wong is clearly part of.

While there is no doubt that Wong will once again be involved in Doctor Strange 3, that could be at least three years away, and that means there is plenty of time for Marvel Studios to allow fans a catch up with Wong in other movies, or as many hope, his own Disney+ show. For now though, Wong’s latest outing by Doctor Strange’s side can be seen in Multiverse of Madness in cinemas.
