Every year, the Academy Awards host the Oscars where the best movies from the past year are awarded based on specific categories. One of the many categories of this award is one for the Best Animated Feature Film. This category was first established in 2002 when Dreamwork’s Shrek, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, received the award from among the three movies nominated. To be eligible for this award, the film must be at least 40 minutes long and be comprised of at least 75% animated scenes.

Many great animated features have been nominated for this award, including films produced by Disney Animation Studios, DreamWorks, Columbia Pictures, and Paramount Pictures. At the upcoming 2022 Academy Awards, the nominess for Best Animated Feature Film are: Encanto, Luca, Flee, The Mitchells vs the Machines, and Raya and the Last Dragon. 10 Toy Story 4

While most people were surprised when Disney announced a fourth installment to the Toy Story franchise, they were able to secure an Oscar for the film. With enhanced animation combined with a stellar cast, it's no surprise the film beat out its competitors from 2019.

9 Rango

After accidentally being stranded in the desert, Rango, a chameleon, winds up in an old western town called Dirt where they are in desperate need of a Sheriff and water. Always up for an adventure, Rango takes on the challenge to find the missing water for the town.

This 2011 Oscar winner is one of the few non-Disney films from this list to win an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. Between Johnny Depp's stellar acting and the quirky storyline, Rango is certainly one of the more underrated films to have won the Oscar.

8 Brave

Set in Scotland during a mythical time, Princess Merida is not your average princess. The aspiring archer and impetuous princess disagrees with her mother, the Queen, on how a princess should act. In an act of defiance, Merida visits a witch who turns her mother into a bear. Together, this mother-daughter duo must learn to work together to turn her mother back into a human before the spell is made permanent. With its groundbreaking CGI, Brave won its Oscar for animated films produced in 2012. The touching storyline and Scottish culture definitely helped to boost the film among its competition.

7 Zootopia

In a world where predator and prey live in harmony, a rookie bunny cop teams up with a cynical con artist fox to uncover the conspiracy about why predators are now attacking prey. This meter maid turned cop has to rise above stereotype and save the city of Zootopia. It's easy to see how this Zootopia was able to win an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. While being able to give animals human characteristics, this film also touches on real life topics of pride and diversity.

6 Frozen

Frozen Sing-Along Version in Theaters January 31st

In Frozen, newly crowned Queen Elsa accidentally unleashes her ice powers cursing her home to an infinite winter. Her sister, Princess Anna, must find Elsa, who has since ran away, and get her to bring back summer. Anna teams up with a mountain man, his reindeer, and a talking snowman to help her convince Elsa to come back home. Between the songs, characters, and snowy artistry, this film was one of the most popular films to have won an Oscar during the last decade. This 2013 film spurred a sequel in 2019 and a few animated shorts throughout the years.

5 Inside Out

Uprooted from her Midwest life to the busy San Francisco, 11-year-old Riley must navigate her new life. This film centers around the emotions that make up Riley's personality: Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness. When Sadness and Joy are accidentally swept away from headquarters, the emotions must help as Riley’s personality changes.

Backed by a stellar cast, Inside Out provided a unique insight into what could be going out inside our minds. Between the unique take on one's personality and the visually appealing images, its no wonder why this film won its Oscar.

4 Toy Story 3

Andy is off to college in the third installment of the Toy Story series. Instead of being put in the attic for safekeeping, Woody and the gang are delivered to a daycare center by accident. It’s up to Woody to get everyone back safely.

Of the entire Toy Story franchise, Toy Story 3 is perhaps the most popular and successful series in Disney history. In fact, not only was this film nominated for 2010's Best Animated Feature Film, but it was also nominated for Best Picture. It was only the third time that an animated film was nominated for Best Picture.

3 Big Hero 6

A Robotics nerd Hiro Hamada discovers an inflatable health care robot Baymax created in the past by his brother Tadashi. After a terrible accident, Hiro and Baymax team up with four others to save their hometown from an evil super villain who is trying to take over their town with an invention Hiro made.

Big Hero 6 is perhaps the most underrated film to have won this award. Arguably, this 2014 film is one of Disney's most underrated films. The CGI and storyline both helped to propel this film above its competition. It recently had emerged in the news with rumors of a live-action remake as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

2 Coco

Despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, Miguel dreams of being a musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. After attempting to steal the late de la Cruz’s guitar to play in a show, he is sent to the mystical Land of the Dead where he meets his old ancestors and a man named Hector who was unable to visit the land of the living. Together Hector and Miguel learn the true reasoning behind his family’s music ban. In Coco, filled with bright colors and images, Mexican culture and traditions are finally given the spotlight. Between the music and imagery, this film will go on being a fan favorite for years to come.
