Jennifer Garner headlines the quintessential rom-com of the 2000s in 13 Going on 30, in which she portrays a 13-year-old girl from 1987 who after making a wish on her birthday finds herself shockingly waking up at age 30.

The feel-good flick co-stars Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer and Andy Serkis and was both a critical and commerical hit, earning over $96 million at the box office and firmly establishing Garner as a sensational leading lady. 13 Going on 30 has been celebrated for its empowering message and memorable performances, including the unforgettable scene in which the cast breakout in an improntu dance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

The Chronicles of Riddick

Vin Diesel in The Chronicles of Riddick
Universal Pictures

Vin Diesel is back at it again as the titular fugitive on the run from bounty hunters and a dangerous group of religious fanatics in the 2004 sci-fi flick The Chronicles of Riddick, depicting the Galactic survivor as he goes head-to-head with the ruthless Necromongers, who will stop at nothing to either convert or eliminate all human life on their quest of domination.

Though the film earned lackluster reviews from critics, moviegoers enjoyed watching the popular action star duke it out against various enemies in order to protect the order of the universe, and the film would go on to become a cult classic of sorts. The Chronicles of Riddick went on to inspire a video game, animated short and the 2013 sequel Riddick, with Diesel returning.

Warm Bodies

Summit Entertainment

Jonathan Levine directed the 2013 zombie rom-com Warm Bodies, telling the strange-yet-charming story of the blossoming relationship between a zombie and young woman after a devastating apocalypse wipes out much of humanity. When R (Nicholas Hoult) meets survivor Julie (Teresa Palmer), his attraction to her causes his heart to beat for the first time since his transformation, and over the course of the picture his love for her slowly causes him to return to his original non-zombified human form.

The endearing horror romance film is unique for being told from the zombie's perspective instead of the survivors, earning praise for its unique approach to storytelling. The Chicago Sun-Times wrote in their glowing review that the rom-com is "a well-paced, nicely directed, post-apocalyptic love story with a terrific sense of humor and the, um, guts to be unabashedly romantic and unapologetically optimistic."

Apollo 13

Ron Howard directed the critically-acclaimed 1995 space docudrama Apollo 13, touting a superb cast featuring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton as the brave astronauts aboard the eponymous spacecraft that becomes jeopardized after an oxygen tank fails, causing the trio to improvise their return to Earth.

To make the Oscar-winning drama as realistic and accurate as possible, Howard enlisted the help of NASA to train the lead actors, sending them to the U.S. Space Camp to train alongside real-life astronaut Jim Lovell (whom Hanks portrayed). The esteemed director also shot scenes aboard a reduced-gravity aircraft to capture the weightlessness of space, making the picture feel that much more real.

The Quiet Ones

The 2014 British horror film The Quiet Ones stars Jared Harris as Oxford University professor Joseph Coupland, who sets out to prove that the supernatural and poltergeists do not exist and are simply products of the human mind. Coupland takes a group of his brightest students to a remote location in order to create a poltergeist via unorthodox tests, ultimately leading to horrific events and a terrifying fallout. The pulse-pounding film is based on the real-life 1972 parapsychology study known as the Philip experiment that took place in Toronto, a heavily-criticized operation that investigated whether humans can communicate with fictionalized spirits.

Fruitvale Station

Michael B. Jordan delivers a star-making performance in the 2013 biographical drama Fruitvale Station, in which the talented actor appears as Oscar Grant, whose tragic death by a Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer in 2009 served as a precursor to the Black Lives Movement and led to a public outcry. Ryan Croogler directed the poignant picture, chronicling the events leading up to Grant's death and the riots and protests that ensued in the heartbreaking aftermath.

Fruitvale Station premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it won both the prestigious Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic Film; the biopic currently holds a 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating by critics.

To prepare for the monumental role, Foxx attended classes at the Braille Institute, played the piano, and wore eyes prosthetics that left him blind for 14 hours a day during shooting. He fully embodies the legendary singer, warts and all.

Billy Madison

Adam Sandler was in all his comedic glory in the 1995 farce Billy Madison, with the funnyman appearing as a spoiled and dense 27-year-old heir who must retake every grade in school within 6 months in order to inherit his wealthy father's business empire. Sandler is joined by stars like Chris Farley, Norm McDonald and Bridgette Wilson in the '90s cult classic, establishing the comedian's box office draw and appeal following his departure from Saturday Night Live. Though critics and reviews weren't too kind towards Sandler's flick, it nonetheless attracted a large audience following and is heavily considered to be Sandler's finest comedic portrayal.
