Valentine's Day is around the corner, and that means there is a desire to find something romantic to watch, be it on the actual holiday or in the build-up to it. It can be difficult to find the right movie to watch, and while a romantic night out at the movies is always an option, there is an obvious appeal of staying in and watching a movie at home. With so many streaming services to choose from, Hulu has made itself an appealing choice with a wide selection of titles ranging from various studios.

For Hulu subscribers, there are plenty of great films to watch that show romances from a wide variety of tones and subject matters. Love stories with happy endings, tragic endings, or bittersweet and told in different time periods, with characters ranging in age from 17 to 80. With that in mind, these are the best romance movies streaming on Hulu for Valentine's Day 2023.

If Beale Street Could Talk

Annapurna Pictures

If Beale Street Could Talk is certainly a more tragic romance, but still is an incredibly moving one that is worth checking out. Barry Jenkins' follow-up film to his Academy Award-winning Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk tells the story of a young woman who seeks to clear the name of her wrongly charged boyfriend and prove his innocence before the birth of their child.

If Beale Street Could Talk is an intimate love story, one filled with tragedy that has sadly only gotten more relevant as time goes on. Not all romances have traditionally happy endings, but even a more downbeat realistic ending doesn't mean there is not an incredibly powerful love story at the center.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Neon
Hulu

Set in France in the late 18th century, Portrait of a Lady on Fire tells the story of a romantic affair between an aristocrat and a painter commissioned to paint her portrait. Released in 2019, the film received near universal acclaim upon release and in 2022 was ranked the 30th greatest film of all time in the Sight & Sound critics’ poll.

Not only is it recommended to watch a film with great reviews that is regarded as a modern classic, but the movie is a beautifully moving love story that is also a tragedy. Yet unlike other LGBTQ+ romances that tend to feature a tragic death, the real tragedy here is how society is destined to keep these two people in love apart. Had they been born later, they would have had a chance. A gorgeous-looking film with wonderful performances, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a great film for Valentine's Day or any other time of the year.

The film makes for a perfect time capsule for when romantic comedies were a major box office draw and awards contenders, as the movie earned Diane Keaton an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. At its core, Something's Gotta Give remains an enduring classic because it is a reminder that it is never too late to find love.

Love, Simon

Simon and Bram
20th Century Fox

While Love, Simon is more of an LGBTQ+ coming-of-age story, the movie is also a romantic comedy. Centering on the titular Simon, the movie follows his journey to come out to his friends and family as gay while also trying to figure out who in his class is the potential romantic interest he has been speaking to. In the end, the film features a classic romantic comedy gesture that lifts the spirit and reminds anybody regardless of sexual orientation the experience of first love.

Amour

Amour
Les Films du Losange

Amour is another tragic romance, but one that is worth checking out. An Academy Award Best Picture nominee, Amour focuses on the final days of an elderly French married couple and retired music teachers. When the wife has a stroke and needs to be taken care of by her husband, the two grapple with their final moments together.

Amour is a heart-wrenching love story, one that digs into the aspects of responsibility in a romance but also one where two people very much in love get to be together until the very end. When watching Amour, make sure to have some tissue on hand.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Zack and Miri Make a Porno
The Weinstein Company

Zack and Miri Make a Porno may not sound like a Valentine's Day movie at first, given how vulgar the title sounds, but that is sort of what makes the movie so ingenious. The film focuses on the titular duo after their power is shut off; when they decide to make their own porno to earn money and recruit their friends and other people to help, these two childhood friends and roommates begin to realize their feelings for one another.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno features many laugh-out-loud moments and crude sex jokes that one expects, but it's also a very sincere and sweet love story at its core. This isn't just a movie about sex, but one about finding love, and how sometimes it can be discovered right in front of you.
