We will soon say goodbye to Bob Odenkirk's Saul Goodman, but that does not necessarily mean we've seen the last of the characters in the Breaking Bad universe. The first (and, as of now, only) spinoff of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul serves as a prequel series by revealing the origin story of Saul, whose real name is Jimmy McGill. Against the odds, the series has proven to be a hit that stands on its own, enjoying a critically-acclaimed run that will ultimately last six seasons.

This summer, fans will see the conclusion of the sixth and final season, and it's bittersweet for those who've spent years investing in these characters. People want to know how this story unfolds, along with how Better Call Saul ultimately links up to the Breaking Bad timeline. At the same time, the end of the show means we'll likely never see some of these characters again, given that a great many of them go on to meet their end in Breaking Bad. Another prequel seems improbable given that the cast isn't getting any younger, but there's always a chance another spinoff could further explore this universe with different characters.

In any case, there are no other shows set in the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul universe that are in active development. But the creators have not shut the door on the possibility just yet, as both Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould remain open to doing more in this world if the right idea comes along. However, that's not going to happen anytime soon, as both are pursuing other projects. As Gould said, per Deadline:

”I love these characters, I love this world. Maybe someday, but personally I’m going to take a little break from that world and try something else, just to prove that I can.”

Gilligan agrees. He's been working on something he says is entirely different from the high-stakes drama seen in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and he's hoping that will land somewhere before he starts thinking of other creative plans. Nevertheless, he's keeping the window open, as he had this to say about the possibility of doing another spinoff about another character, such as fan-favorite Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn).

“I think that’s my answer too, there are stories left to tell, but it’s not proving something to the world, it’s about proving something to yourself. That thing, I’m working on, hopefully someone will want to buy it, someone will want to make it.”

Better Call Saul Needs to Finish Before Spinoff Speculation Should Begin

Better Call Saul Star Michael Mando Heads to Set for Sixth and Final Season

There's a lot of speculation about which characters would be suitable for another spinoff, but perhaps it is better to hold off on giving serious consideration to any one character just yet. Anything can happen in the final season of Better Call Saul, and other than what ultimately happens in the future with Jimmy McGill as "Gene" in Omaha, what fans are dying to know is what becomes of the prequel's original characters.

Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn), Michael Mando (Nacho Varga), Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian), and Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) are not in Breaking Bad so it remains unknown what becomes of these particular characters. Many fans are fearing the worst, but just because they do not show up in the parent series doesn't necessarily mean they're dead and gone, just that they haven't interacted with Walter White.

The answers will start to arrive when season 6 of Better Call Saul premieres on AMC on April 18.
