Nicolas Cage will be back as the arms dealer Yuri Orlov in the long-awaited sequel of Andrew Niccol’s Lord of War, and he’ll be joined by one of the best young actors of the moment, Bill Skarsgård.

Variety reports that the sequel to the 2005 film has finally been greenlit and is coming to the screen from the Vendôme Group and FilmNation Entertainment. Additionally, the outlet confirms that the story will now become a family affair, with Skarsgård joining Cage to play his son.

The original story followed Russian arms dealer Orlov, blinded by ambition and the power bestowed by his business, as he roamed different countries at war supplying them with black market weapons. The more he advances in his business, the greater the danger Yuri is in while carrying out his business, but he finds it impossible to stop.

In the sequel, entitled Lords of War, Cage's character will discover that he has a son, and that the young man has also become one of his main competitors trying to surpass his own father, leading them both to face each other in a war that will have dire consequences for the rest of the world.

“There is so much more to explore with these characters,” director Niccol expressed in the official statement. “Plato said it best – ‘Only the dead have seen the end of war.’ I’m looking forward to spending more time in the company of the charming devil that is Yuri Orlov and now his illegitimate son – who turns out to not be legitimate in any way.”

Niccol is also known for working in the acclaimed The Truman Show, which earned him an Academy-Award nomination for Best Original Script. His filmography includes some other great titles such as Anon, Gattaca and The Terminal.

Both Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård are going through a great moment in their careers. One as a highly established actor who has had a resurgence in recent years, and the other as a rising star who’s earring his place in Hollywood.

In 2023 alone, Cage has already released two films including Universal's acclaimed comedy Renfield, where he plays Dracula. In addition, he has two other releases scheduled for the remainder of the year, Sympathy for the Devil and The Retirement Plan.

Last year he played himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent alongside Pedro Pascal, and released two other titles, Butcher's Crossing and The Old Way.

As for Skarsgård, he had his first big break in 2017 when he played the terrifying clown Pennywise in Andy Muschietti's It. Since then, he has participated in major productions such as Deadpool 2, The Devil All the Time, Barbarian and recently in John Wick Chapter 4.

Coming soon, the actor will have a big challenge ahead of him being part of the remake of the 1922 horror classic, Nosferatu, where he will play the titular character.
