After Charlie Hunnam dropped out of playing Christian Grey in Universal's Fifty Shades of Grey earlier this month, the role has quickly become one of the hottest parts in town. Today, we have word that actor Billy Magnussen tested on Friday, along with Jamie Dornan (The Fall).

Both actors read with director Sam Taylor-Johnson and star Dakota Johnson, who is playing Anastasia Steele. Jamie Dornan was mentioned as a contender last week, along with True Blood star Alexander Skarsgård. We also /francois-arnaund-eyed-to-replace-charlie-hunnam-as-christian-grey-in-fifty-shades-of-grey/reported last week that François Arnaud (The Borgias) was in contention as well. Scott Eastwood (Fury, Texas Chainsaw 3D) has also tried out for the coveted part.

Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing from an adapted screenplay by Kelly Marcel, which is being polished by Patrick Marber. We reported last month that production is scheduled to begin in Vancouver next month, although it isn't known if shooting will be delayed due to Charlie Hunnam's departure.

Billy Magnussen is scheduled to start shooting an HBO pilot for David Milch in the next few weeks, although sources say his schedule can be worked out to star in Fifty Shades of Grey, if an offer is made. The actor most recently starred in The Brass Teapot and The East. He will next be seen in the Disney musical Into the Woods, where he took over for Jake Gyllenhaal after he left the project.
