Bird Box: Where the Cast of Netflix's Original Movie is Today

Netflix found huge success with the original post-apocalyptic thriller film Bird Box, directed by Susanne Bier and released in 2018. The film was a massive success for Netflix, with 26 million people in the U.S. watching it in its first week. The film follows Malorie Hayes (Sandra Bullock) as she tries to protect her children from entities which cause people to die by suicide if they look directly at them. As one of Netflix's best original movies, it's no wonder, then, that a sequel is currently in development.

One of the key ingredients to the success of Bird Box was its all-star cast, featuring an array of widely talented actors whom viewers will recognize from their successful careers outside Bird Box, as well as some relative newcomers whose careers have now blossomed. Here’s a look at where the cast of Bird Box is today.

Sandra Bullock

In Bird Box, Sandra Bullock starred in the lead role as Malore, a pregnant woman who found refuge in a house full of strangers and finds herself caring for two children while battling the elements and extra-terrestrial forces, all while searching for a rumored sanctuary, blindfolded. Bullock’s career spans 20 decades, and some of her most notable work includes Miss Congeniality, Speed, Ocean's 8, , and Gravity. After Bird Box, Bullock unsurprisingly continued to star in successful films such as The Unforgivable which was directed by Nora Fingscheidt and premiered on Netflix in 2021. In The Unforgivable, she starred as Ruth Slater, alongside Viola Davis, Jon Bernthal, and Vincent D'Onofrio. She also starred in the action-adventure The Lost City in 2022 alongside Changing Tatum and Daniel Radcliffe, which was a moderate box office success. In addition to this, she is due to star in the upcoming film Bullet Train as Maria Beetle.

Trevante Rhodes

Trevante Rhodes plays Tom, who is a survivor that helps Malorie and eventually ends up falling in love with her. Rhodes previously achieved acclaim by playing Chiron in the Academy Award-winning film Moonlight. After Bird Box, he appeared in The United States vs. Billie Holiday which stars Andra Day as the lead in the biographical film. Rhodes starred as Jimmy Fletcher and his performance was well received by critics.

John Malkovich

John Malkovich played Douglas, who was one of the tougher survivors that put himself in harm’s way to protect the other survivors. Malkovich already boasts an incredibly strong filmography, with features hit films such as Mulholland Falls, Shadow of the Vampire, Johnny English, Juno and most notably Being John Malkovich. Since his role in Bird Box, seven more films have already been theatrically released which he has starred in — most notably, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, where he played Judge Edward Cowart, who featured in the Ted Bundy case, as well as his role as Duke in 2020’s Ava. Malkovich also found success in TV with his role as Dr. Adrian Mallory in the show Space Fore.

Jacki Weaver

Jacki Weaver played Cheryl, who was crucial to helping her fellow survivors stay safe and alive. Weaver already featured notable credits through her work in The Silver Linings Playbook as well as The Five-Year Engagement, and she has continued to star in successful films, such as Poms, where she played Cheryl, and The Grudge, where she portrayed Lorna Moody.

Sarah Paulson

Sarah Paulson had a brief appearance in the film as Jessica and was killed off close to the beginning, which shocked viewers as she was one of the most recognizable faces of the film. Paulson is widely known for her work with Ryan Murphy in series like American Horror Story and American Crime Story as well as feature films such as Ocean's 8. After her role in Bird Box, Paulson continued to find success in her roles in films such as Glass, The Goldfinch and Run as well as continuing to star in American Crime Story and American Horror Story.

Rosa Salazar

Rosa Salazar portrayed Lucy, a survivor who betrayed the rest of the group. She previously had starred as Zoe in NBC’s Parenthood as well as in the film Maze Runner. She has currently found success in TV starring as a main role in the TV series Undone where she plays Alma Winograd-Diaz.

Danielle Macdonald

Danielle Macdonald played Olympia who was responsible for the demise of most of the original survivors. She had guest starred on shows such as Glee before her appearance in Bird Box, and then found success in other Netflix films such as Dumplin and the sci-fi thriller Paradise Hills.
