Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam movie has finally set its sights on a director. Jaume Collet-Serra, who recently collaborated with The Rock on Disney's Jungle Cruise, is now being eyed to helm the DC Comics adaptation. This movie has been in the works for some time now and Johnson has been attached to the role for years. Now, at long last, things may finally be moving in the right direction.

According to several reports, Jaume Collet-Serra is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to helm Black Adam. When last we heard, the hope was to get production going in 2020. Apparently, Dwayne Johnson and his producing partners were extremely impressed with the filmmaker's transition to a big-budget movie when working on Jungle Cruise. Once production wrapped up, they made the decision to try and get this deal done. Interestingly enough, Collet-Serra was actually being eyed to helm Suicide Squad 2 long before James Gunn landed the gig. So this is kind of full circle for him when it comes to the DC universe.

Dwayne Johnson has been attached to the role for years now. Originally, the idea was to have Black Adam appear in this year's Shazam, as he's the hero's primary antagonist. However, at one point in the development process, it was decided that it would be best to give the character his own movie before having him square off with the alter ego of Billy Batson. Warner Bros. is said to view this project as a priority now, following the success that Shazam enjoyed earlier this year. The movie was embraced by critics and moviegoers alike, on its way to $367 million at the box office. While that's not a terribly impressive number, since the movie had a slightly lower budget, the studio has reason to think the hero has a future.

In the years since the wrestler-turned-actor initially became attached to the role of Black Adam, he's become one of the biggest stars on the planet. This will be his first ever comic book movie role. Now that the DC universe is back on track following a string of solo movies such as Wonder Woman and Aquaman, having a star like Dwayne Johnson in one of these movies could prove to be a huge success, if executed correctly. Adam Sztykiel (Rampage) wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay.

Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Dwayne Johnson's Seven Bucks Productions will produce the movie. Beau Flynn is also on board to produce. Jaume Collet-Serra is known for his previous collaborations with Liam Neeson, such as Non-Stop, Unknown and The Commuter. He also helmed the Blake Lively shark movie The Shallows, as well as the horror movie Orphan. For now, Black Adam does not yet have a release date set but if production does get underway next year, we could expect to see it debut in 2021 or 2022. We'll be sure to keep you posted as any further details on the project are made available. This news was first reported by Observer.
