Apple TV+ has released the official trailer for the upcoming limited thriller series Black Bird, starring Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser. Based on an incredible true story, Black Bird follows a high school football star turned convict, James Keene (Egerton), as he befriends a reported serial killer, Larry Hall (Hauser), to extract a confession and secure himself an early release. Black Bird also stars the late Ray Liotta, in one of his last acting roles, as a former police officer and father of Egerton’s character.

Developed by acclaimed author Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, Shutter Island), Black Bird is based on the 2011 non-fiction book In With the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption by James Keene and Hillel Levin. Black Bird is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on July 8. You can check out the trailer below.

The official plot synopsis for Black Bird reads:

"Inspired by actual events, when high school football hero and decorated policeman’s son Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime — enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no possibility of parole. Keene quickly realizes his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall’s appeal goes through. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another tale from a serial liar? This dramatic and captivating story subverts the crime genre by enlisting the help of the very people put behind bars to solve its mysteries."

The Black Bird trailer opens with Jimmy Keene and his dad discussing his future as he faces the harsh reality of spending his youth in prison. While Ray Liotta seems to be playing a supporting role, it's always a pleasure to see the legendary Goodfellas star perform. And Liotta certainly brings the intensity to his role as Taron Egerton struggles to choose between easy survival in a minimum-security prison or partnering up with a serial killer in the facility for the criminally insane. Paul Walter Hauser also stuns as the creepy Larry Hall. He reportedly lost 40 lbs to play the character.

Black Bird also stars Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine) and Sepideh Moafi (The Killing of Two Lovers) and is directed by Michaël R. Roskam (The Drop), Jim McKay, and Joe Chapelle.

Black Bird will feature one of Ray Liotta’s final acting performances after the Goodfellas star passed away last month. The series creator, Dennis Lehane, expressed his excitement about working with the veteran actor in Black Bird, calling his performance a "masterclass." In a statement (via Variety), Lehane said:

"It was, quite literally, the culmination of a lifelong dream to work with Ray Liotta. From the moment I saw him blow out the screen, his co-stars, and the back of the theater in Something Wild, I found him the most electric American actor of his generation.

I had no other actor in mind and was floored — humbled, honored, fist-pump elated — when he leapt at playing the part less than 24 hours after we sent him the scripts. And the performance he gave? It was a master class. He wholly embodied a man who realizes that his lifetime of cutting corners and flitting along the edges of corruption have hung an albatross of very bleak options around the neck of his own son."
