Sony has made the first overnight deal of the Sundance Film Festival. According to Variety, the studio has closed the deal to acquire the blaxploitation film Black Dynamite.
Sony purchased the North American distribution rights for $2 million, in a negotiations period that lasted into the wee hours of the morning. The deal was said to come with a heavy marketing commitment from Sony and the studio will aim for a release later this year. The studio buyers also believe a franchise can be spawned from this film.
The film, a blaxpoitation spoof with zany action sequences, premiered at the festival late Sunday night, with the offer soon following after the film ended.
