Following the first look photo released yesterday, Warner Bros. has debuted the first trailer for Black Mass. After spending the past several years playing lovable rogues like Captain Jack Sparrow and this year's Mortdecai, Johnny Depp descends into true villain territory by portraying the infamous gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger. While this mobster served as the basis for Jack Nicholson's Frank Costello in The Departed and Pete Postlethwaite's Fergie Colm in The Town, this biopic gives us a glimpse into his real story.
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James 'Whitey' Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history. However, after the Feds closed in on their targets, they double crossed Bulger and ultimately prosecuted him, along with his partner in crime and the original FBI agent working with him.
Dakota Johnson, Juno Temple, Jesse Plemons, Benedict Cumberbatch, Adam Scott, Corey Stoll and Kevin Bacon co-star in director Scott Cooper's biopic, in theaters September 18. We'll have to wait until then to see if this biopic also delves into Whitey Bulger's 2011 arrest in Santa Monica, California, where he was caught after going into hiding for 16 years, 12 of which he spent as #2 on the FBI's Most Wanted List, right behind Osama Bin Laden. Take a look at the trailer below, and stay tuned for more on Black Mass.
