Marvel decided to give fans a little treat today by releasing the Black Widow trailer. The biggest hook here is that Scarlett Johannson is finally getting a solo movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is something that has arguably been overdue for some time. Yet, as anyone who has watched the trailer can attest, there's a lot going on here and much to discuss. Chief amongst those discussion topics is the reveal of David Harbour as Red Guardian.

It had previously been revealed that the Stranger Things star was set to play Red Guardian in the latest addition to the MCU, but we hadn't seen much of him in costume. David Harbour appeared in the background of a previously released poster, but that was about it. Here, we get a few really good looks at the actor as Alexei Shostakov, who essentially goes on to become the Russian equivalent of Captain America. That is evidenced by the character's costume in the trailer, which bears a lot of similarities to Cap's suit, only red instead of blue.

We see the character in several key sequences in the Black Widow trailer. Aside from the money shot of David Harbour in the full costume fighting Taskmaster, we see a shot of him in civilian clothes at what looks to possibly be a prison, as well as a shot of him shirtless and flexing, which gives us a look at Alexei's tattooed body. There's also the joke that he makes about the costume still fitting, implying that he's gained some weight since the last time he put it on.

For those who may not be familiar, Red Guardian first appeared in The Avengers #43 in 1967 and was created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema. The Alexei Shostakov version of the character was a patriotic Russian hero. He was trained by the KGB to become the country's answer to Captain America, only without the super soldier serum. Instead, he had to make up for it with advanced weaponry and elite training. In the comics, he was married to Natasha Romanoff. It doesn't appear, based on what the trailer shows us, the MCU is taking things in that direction. But David Harbour does have a very important line in the trailer, which is worth discussing.

"Family, back together again."

The sequence includes Florence Pugh's Yelena, Scarlett Johannson's Natasha and Rachel Weisz's Melina sitting around a table. Are they all related by blood? Or is it more of an adopted family situation? The latter option seems more likely. Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) is in the director's chair, so we'll have to see her take on it. Black Widow is set to be the first Phase 4 MCU movie and will hit theaters on May 1, 2020, from Disney and Marvel. We've collected some Twitter reactions to Red Guardian for you to check out below.
