It seems like Hollywood has been trying to remake The Blob ever since Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith last faced the deadly gelatinous alien all the way back in the 1988 remake. For a long while, it looked like Rob Zombie was going to resurrect the classic sci-fi title as a new franchise, but that version of the movie never moved forward. Last year, it was announced that The Expendables 2 and Con Air director Simon West would be taking the helm. Now, talking with Den of Geeks, he has opened up about his plans. And it sounds like this will be a much-more action oriented horror outing.

This reboot will actually give The Blob a backstory. The monster at the center of this new tale is compared to the Xenomorphs from Alien and the interplanetary hunters from Predator. And this oozing slime will be just as believable as the dinosaurs in the original Jurassic Park. Simon West explains:

"It's definitely going to be on a much bigger canvas than the originals, which were much more small, niche genre horror movies. My version of The Blob's going to be more sci-fi....The blob itself will be more sophisticated, more along the lines of Alien and Predator and things like that - much more science-based, the way Jurassic Park made you believe you could bring back dinosaurs with a bit of DNA from a mosquito. This will be much more explained on where the blob comes from and how it works. It'll be a much more sophisticated creature - because it is a monster movie rather than a horror in that sense."

Simon West went onto call the new Blob an alien invasion thriller. But he has another project lined up first, so it will still be a little while before we see this new version of the 1958 classic. What do you think of The Blob getting a backstory? Does it even need one? The original didn't!
