Yahoo! Movies has just released the first trailer for the upcoming indie movie Blue Valentine, which will be released in theaters on December 31. Click below to watch this new video and you can also read below the trailer for news about the movie receiving an NC-17 rating:

Deadline New York is reporting that the MPAA handed out an NC-17 rating for this movie from The Weinstein Company. The movie stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams as a young couple and follows the downward spiral of their eroding relationship.

The site reports that the reason behind the NC-17 rating was due to a scene where the couple spends a night in a hotel and, after they get drunk, he wants to have sex while she doesn't, although she ends up doing so anyway. Here's the site's description of the scene:

"That hurts his pride and the result is an upsetting scene that makes you squirm, but is an honest one that establishes clearly that this couple has nothing left and isn't going to make it because love has turned into contempt. There is barely any nudity in the scene, as I recall (though I haven't seen it since last January) and there is no violence. It was hardly a moment that would make you think, well here comes an NC-17."

The Weinstein Company have appealed ratings in the past, most recently with the R rating given to the documentary The Tillman Story, which they lost. It wasn't said if The Weinstein Company will appeal this rating, but we'll be sure to keep you posted with any further details.
