Actor Stephen Root has joined the cast of HBO's Boardwalk Empire in a Season 3 recurring role.

Stephen Root will portray Gaston Means, a former forger, swindler, and murder suspect who somehow became a special investigator for the U.S. Department of Justice. He will be working under Christopher McDonald's character, Attorney General Harry Daugherty. Stephen Root joins fellow new addition Bobby Cannavale, who we reported last week joined the cast as a series regular, portraying gangster Gyp Rosetti.

Season 2 of Boardwalk Empire saw several original cast members meet their demise, so it's not surprising that HBO is bringing in a lot of new blood for Season 3. Earlier this week, we reported that the network didn't pick up the option on actress Paz de la Huerta.

It isn't clear when Boardwalk Empire Season 3 will debut on HBO, but it is clear that there will be plenty of new faces in Atlantic City this season.
