Legendary comedy duo Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are reuniting for a new comedy series, and the premise alone makes it clear that it will be must-see television. Per Deadline, the stars of Mr. Show with Bob and David are getting back together to develop a docu-style comedy for the streaming service Paramount+. Bill Odenkirk is also teaming up with the pair and ViacomCBS to make the series, which is dubbed Guru Nation.
In Guru Nation, Odenkirk and Cross will play rival cult gurus manipulating the minds of their deluded followers. No additional details about the plot have been revealed beyond that basic premise. Even so, Odenkirk and Cross as cult leaders sounds amazing as anyone familiar with the work of both comic actors can attest. Additional casting information has yet to be revealed.
Bill Odenkirk, who also wrote for The Simpsons and Futurama, served as a producer on Mr. Show with Bob and David, making this series more of a reunion of the HBO show. The new series comes from Paramount Television Studios with Bob Odenkirk, David Cross, Bill Odenkirk, Jason Woliner, Marc Provissiero, Naomi Odenkirk, and Tim Sarkes executing producing. Jason Woliner (Borat 2) will direct the series.
Bob Odenkirk Is Wrapping Up His Run as Better Call Saul's Jimmy McGill
Currently, Bob Odenkirk is wrapping up his long-running role as Jimmy McGill (aka Saul Goodman) in the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul extended universe. The Saul team will soon finish filming on the very last episodes of the series which will bring McGill's story to a close after he was first introduced in the parent series Breaking Bad. During production on the final season, Odenkirk suffered a heart attack, though he has since resumed filming after his recovery. And it sounds like season 6 will close the series with a bang.
"It was very exciting. Very very exciting. You have no idea what’s going to happen. It’s out of control what these guys wrote. Out of control," Lalo Salamanca actor Tony Dalton said, per Collider.
Better Call Saul has allowed for Odenkirk to show another side to himself as an actor. He had typically played more comedic roles, but delving so far into Jimmy McGill's tragic story has put on display just how amazing Odenkirk really can be as a dramatic actor. The final season is expected to arrive on AMC sometime within the next few months with production on the final episodes nearly finished. Odenkirk has also since taken on the role of a violent action movie hero with last year's hit film Nobody and there are rumblings of a sequel getting made.
As for David Cross, the actor last year appeared in the holiday film 8-Bit Christmas with Neil Patrick Harris and June Diane Raphael. In recent years, he's also appeared on shows like Goliath, Genius, What We Do in the Shadows, and Station Eleven. Cross also does voiceover work for animated shows like Big Mouth, Teenage Euthanasia, and Bubble Guppies.
Guru Nation doesn't have an official release date on Paramount+ set at this time.
