Another screening of The Whale has brought another standing ovation for lead actor Brendan Fraser. From A24 and director Darren Aronofsky, The Whale stars Fraser in one of the most unique roles the veteran actor has ever played. He stars as a 600-pound recluse who hopes to reconnect with his daughter (Sadie Sink) before it's too late, years after abandoning his family to pursue a new life with his gay lover. In September, The Whale held its World Premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. The actor was recorded breaking down into tears when he was met with a 6-minute standing ovation at the event. After another screening of the film at the London Film Festival, critic Lauren Bradshaw recorded footage of Fraser earning another standing ovation, causing him to take a bow and thank the audience."Am I at Venice? 5 min standing ovation for Brendan Fraser’s masterpiece performance in The Whale," Bradshaw wrote when posting the video to Twitter. "He had the crowd in the palm of his hand the entire movie. My heart is in my throat."You can watch Fraser thanking the audience for the ovation by watching Bradshaw's video in the tweet below.

The Whale is based on the 2012 play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter. The screenplay for the feature film adaptation was also written by Hunter with Darren Aronofsky directing. Along with Fraser, the film stars Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins.

While the casting of Fraser has not been without controversy, with some actors questioning why he got the role over an obese queer actor, Fraser has commented on how playing the part has given him a greater understanding of what it would be like to be in that situation. He explained in a Variety interview how wearing the fatsuit required for the role had even given him vertigo.

“I developed muscles I did not know I had," he said. "I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed; it was like stepping off the dock onto a boat in Venice. That [sense of] undulating. It gave me appreciation for those whose bodies are similar. You need to be an incredibly strong person, mentally and physically, to inhabit that physical being.”

On the film's theme, director Darren Aronofsky added, "The saying that you can’t judge a book by its cover is a really big theme in this film. You can’t judge any of these characters by their first impressions. The way that Charlie the English teacher is constantly pushing his students to find honesty and truth to get beyond the cover, I found very inspiring.”

The Whale will be released in theaters by A24 on Dec. 9, 2022.
