To the delight of everyone, the Brenaissance is now underway, with beloved actor Brendan Fraser due to star in several major releases in the near future. Next up is The Whale from director Darren Aronofsky, which finds Fraser as a 600-pound man named Charlie who must face several personal struggles as he tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. The Whale will find Fraser transforming like never before, with the actor now revealing how such a change will be achieved.

“The real task was to authentically create this character with all the tools we have with makeup, prosthetics, suit building, and a little bit of CGI to ensure that the shape of this man’s body obeys the laws of physics and gravity.”

Appearing at the recent GalaxyCon Raleigh, Fraser revealed that the astonishing transformation will be largely achieved using a combination of CGI and prosthetics, with the recent first image from The Whale demonstrating how well this approach has worked.

“I can attest that this project was made by artisans in each and every category,” Fraser added.

Fraser will lead Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, which tells the story of a 600-pound middle-aged man named Charlie who tries to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter. Sadie Sink, who is best known for starring in Netflix’s Stranger Things and the Fear Street trilogy, will star as Ellie, Charlie's daughter, with the two becoming estranged after Charlie abandoned his family for his gay lover, who later died, resulting in him binge eating out of pain and guilt. Written by Samuel D. Hunter and based on his play of the same name, The Whale stars Hong Chau, Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins alongside Fraser and Sink.

While the use of CGI and prosthetics to turn Brendan Fraser into a 600-pound man (that’s 272 kg to our metric system-using friends) has sparked some debate, many are just happy to see Brendan Fraser back after all these years and starring in what is sure to be a highly prestigious picture.

Speaking of prestigious pictures, The Whale is just one of several projects in the pipeline for Brendan Fraser. The Mummy star is all set to star in Martin Scorsese's upcoming western Killers of the Flower Moon alongside acting icons Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. The movie details a period during which several members of the Osage tribe in the United States were murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s, sparking a major FBI investigation involving J. Edgar Hoover.

Earlier this year, Fraser added his name to the period crime thriller No Sudden Move, which finds the actor under the direction of Steven Soderbergh and starring alongside Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, David Harbour, Jon Hamm, and Amy Seimetz. Fraser is also set to star alongside Josh Brolin, Peter Dinklage, and Glenn Close in the comedy Brothers, and lead the upcoming Behind the Curtain of Night. Sadly, Fraser's villainous turn in Batgirl is now unlikely to ever be seen due to the movie's surprise cancellation.

The Whale is now due to have its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in September 2022.
