Brie Larson has signed on to star in the indie drama Room for director Lenny Abrahamson (Frank).

The story centers on a young woman known only as Ma (Brie Larson), who was kidnapped as a teenager and has been held captive for several years in a tiny room. She tries to raise her five-year-old son Jack, who has never seen life beyond the walls of that cramped space.

Emma Donoghue wrote the adapted screenplay based on her own 2010 novel, which was inspired by the true story of Elizabeth Fritzel, a woman who escaped after being held captive for 24 years in a basement, where she gave birth to seven children. Ed Guiney is producing through his Element Pictures company, although no production schedule was given at this time.

Brie Larson received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her performance in Short Term 12. She also recently starred in The Spectacular Now and Don Jon.
