While we won't see a repeat of Britney Spears' performance from last year's MTV Video Music Awards, we can expect to see Spears kicking off this year's show. According to The Hollywood Repoter, Britney Spears will not be performing at this year's VMA's, but the network has confirmed she will opening the awards show.

MTV Networks Music Group President Van Toffler said Wednesday that Spears' show-opening appearance this Sunday will be, "fun and unexpected." Spears also related she was glad to be a part of this historical event.

"MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs? I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated," Spears said in a statement.

Spears' performance of "Gimme More" at last year's VMA's, which was originally touted as her comeback performance, was one of the most controversial events of 2007. This year, Spears is up for 3 VMA awards, including Video of the Year.

"I think for Britney, people are rooting for her, and she's really on the road to recovery," Toffler said.
