Despite quickly garnering a passionate fan base, the critically acclaimed cop comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine was never a ratings juggernaut, and had already come back from being canceled once. Last year, it was announced that the show would come to a close, for good this time, with an eighth and final season. Melissa Fumero, who plays the role of Amy Santiago on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, described the highly emotional process of making Season 8 of the show.

"It's going, we just wrapped on episode five. So we're like midway through, a lot of kind of misty moments happening on set. I will say, as we all start to think about and talk about (it), it feels really weird to be doing something where you know the last day is gonna be so sad and you're probably gonna cry a lot, you're like a month away from crying all the time. It's like a really strange feeling. So we have a lot of moments where it's like, it's too soon, it's too soon. We're not there yet, we're not there yet. And we're just trying to like have fun, like we're shooting any season of Brooklyn."

Brooklyn Nine-Nine tells the story of a group of NYPD cops working under the strict supervision of new police chief Captain Raymond Holt. Much of the show's comedy was derived from the incompetence of the members of the precinct, from arresting someone without a warrant or evidence, to breaking into buildings illegally, to going after the wrong suspects.

The fumbling on the part of the cop characters was played for laughs, and the squad was shown to take matters of justice quite seriously when they could manage it. But after last years' protests, the role of pop culture in normalizing poor police behavior has come under much harsher scrutiny.

As a result, Season 8 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which was in the process of being written at the time, underwent a revamp to address the new questions being raised by the public, and it was also announced that the series as a whole would come to a close with the eighth season. It is not yet known how much of the reason for the cancellation is last year's protests, and how much of the blame lies with the show's ratings. According to Melissa Fumero, the final batch of episodes are going to be like a victory lap for fans and the people who work on the show

"It's bittersweet, but I'm really proud of the show. I'm really proud of this season. I think it's going to be a really satisfying end I hope for the viewers and just trying to think of it as like the victory lap, celebrating the show, celebrating the people I work with. Not trying not to take anything for granted and stay really present."

Brooklyn Nine-Nine features a lead cast consisting of Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Dirk Blocker, and Joel McKinnon Miller. Season 8 will premiere on NBC in August. This news originated at ComicBook.com.
