Many fans of Doctor Who and Buffy The Vampire Slayer would get excited at the prospect of a crossover between the two franchises. In a strange and surreal way, that has now happened thanks to an unfathomable error in a 2022 Buffy The Vampire Slayer calendar, which has seen Doctor Who star Matt Smith featured alongside the familiar faces of Buffy’s Scooby Gang. The mistake was pointed out in a Twitter post by Alex McLevy and followed up by fellow user Andy Lambert, who was responsible for the piece of crossover fan art in the first place and was surprised to see it appearing in the calendar.

The calendar in question appears to have been compiled of images from the internet, and the makers seem to have forgotten the lesson that you don’t believe everything you see on the internet. In her post, McLevy stated, “I’d like to thank the makers of the 2022 BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER calendar for obviously being devoted, passionate fans of the show who can readily identify all the most iconic characters.”

Was there ever a Doctor Who/ Buffy The Vampire Slayer Crossover?

The image seen in the calendar, which appears for the month of January and getting the year off to a strange start for those who purchased it, is not from a long lost crossover of the two franchises but is actually a piece of fan art by Andy Lambert, who was unaware of the image even being used in the calendar until he found himself being tagged in reports about it.

“This was a fan art I made when Matt Smith was still the Doctor which show how old it is, it was made for a fun and was part of a series of Dr Who crossovers. I stopped doing Dr Who art because of sh*t like this - I didn’t do it to line someone else’s pockets,” Lambert said in a response to McLevy’s post.

When it comes to fan art, Doctor Who is one of those series that has so many possibilities due to its use of time travel there are many “wish-list” images that have been created by fans of the show that puts various iterations of The Doctor in other franchises and places in history. Matt Smith was one of the best-loved Doctors of the modern era of Who, succeeding David Tennant in the role, which was certainly no mean feat in itself.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer also retains a large and avid fan base even though the series came to an end in 2003. There have been suggestions of a reprisal of the series being in the works at various points in time, the latest of these coming in 2018 before news reports of Joss Whedon’s on-set behavior becoming widespread and seemingly closing down any chance of a return for the series for now. The original series starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Anthony Head, David Boraneaz and Alyson Hannigan among others and is a much more iconic iteration of the character than the often forgotten 1992 movie version starring Kristy Swanson in the lead role.
