With Captain America: Civil War getting ready to start production in Atlanta later this month, Variety reports that the movie will be the first to use IMAX's new 2D digital cameras. Director Joe Russo confirmed that approximately 15 minutes of the movie will be shot with these IMAX cameras, including one sequence in particular that has, "some incredible scale to it." Here's what the filmmaker had to say below.

"We like being on the cutting edge of technology, and we like to enhance storytelling with technology in a way that pushes the narrative forward creatively. When you're working on a Marvel film, there's a sense of showmanship that goes along with the movies, and no exhibitor exploits that better than IMAX."

Joe Russo and his brother Anthony Russo both plan to shoot Captain America: Civil War in 2D, and convert it to 3D in the post-production process. IMAX has been rather selective about the use of its cameras throughout the years. The company has only allowed access to a handful of filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan (Interstellar), Zack Snyder (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Brad Bird (Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol) and J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens).

This new 2D camera, which was co-developed by the German company Arri, is the company's first 2D digital camera. IMAX has developed a 3D digital camera and a 2D film camera, but this new 2D digital camera is "more compact and easy to use than its film equivalent." Here's what Joe Russo had to say about these new cameras.

"It allows us to keep rolling and do multiple takes while keeping the energy up. Our motto is you can only build a film with what you bring into the editing room, and we like to bring as much as we can. There's an impressionistic quality to film that I'll cherish forever, but today's audience and younger audiences prefer the sharpness and crispness and reality they get from looking at digital."

Captain America: Civil War will begin production on April 27, with a cast that includes Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Frank Grillo (Crossbones), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Daniel Brühl (Baron Zemo), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye). Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are directing from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Stay tuned for more details on Captain America: Civil War as we get closer to production starting.
