Marvel Studios is currently developing the second Captain Marvel movie and we have a ton of questions about what the highly anticipated will hold. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige first announced that Brie Larson was taking on the role of Carol Danvers back in 2016. Feige teased us with some pretty epic concept art at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 and gave us a few tidbits of information to dissect and speculate about. The movie finally hit theaters in March and it was a massive success, going on to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office. Feige went on to officially announce Captain Marvel 2 at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

The seeds for Captain Marvel go back even further than 2017. The studio actually officially announced development of the first movie way back in 2014, which had fans excited. However, many MCU fans were under the assumption that we would see Scarlett Johansson in a standalone Black Widow movie first. That was not to be the case. Marvel Studios had Brie Larson as the first actress to lead a Marvel Cinematic Universe project. With that being said, production on the standalone Natasha Romanoff movie just recently wrapped.

With the end of Infinity War, there was a lot at stake. Marvel Studios introduced the world to Captain Marvel at a time when a lot of fan-favorite superheroes had been turned to dust by the villainous Thanos. To say that excitement for the movie was incredibly high would be a massive understatement, especially with Avengers: Endgame hitting theaters just a few months after the Carol Danvers standalone movie. Kevin Feige has said in the past the Danvers will be a Tony Stark-like figure in the future of the MCU, which means she will more than likely end up in a lot of future projects, possibly including the upcoming Ms. Marvel Disney+ series.

Expectations for Captain Marvel were also high after DC and Warner Bros. had so much success with 2017's Wonder Woman. The rival studio had a leg up on the competition with one of the first female-led superhero movies, who also just happened to be one of the biggest characters in the world. Fans had been waiting years to see Diana Prince on the big screen, so Marvel Studios made a bit of a gamble by bringing in Captain Marvel first, who is definitely not as well-known as Wonder Woman. In the end, the gamble paid off majorly, proving that Kevin Feige and crew know what they're doing at all times.

Captain Marvel 2 is currently in the very early stages of development and we have compiled everything we know about the highly anticipated sequel thus far, which you can read below. We have everything MCU fans should know before walking into theaters, along with some speculation that has been floating around for the past several months. From the sound of things, Carol Danvers is going to be the most powerful character ever introduced in the MCU up to this point and there is a lot more of her story to be told in the future.

26 When will Captain Marvel 2 come out?

Captain Marvel 2

Marvel Studios is released Captain Marvel on March 8th, 2019. The movie was originally supposed to hit theaters on July 6th, 2018, but that did not end up happening for various reasons. While some may have thought that the March release date is a bit weird for a blockbuster superhero movie, it worked out very well for Black Panther in February 2018. Additionally, Captain Marvel was in a prime spot, right before Avengers: Endgame hit theaters, along with Spider-Man: Far From Home. Needless to say, the movie was a hit.

So, when will we get a Captain Marvel 2 release date? That has yet to be announced at this time, but Kevin Feige did confirm that the sequel is officially happening. It just won't be in the MCU's Phase 4, though it is likely to end up in Marvel Phase 5, which means we probably won't see it until 2022 at the earliest. We'll have a better idea when the project gets into the pre-production process.

25 When will the first Captain Marvel 2 Trailer be released?

Captain Marvel 2 Trailer

Since we don't have a release date, it makes it pretty hard to figure out when the first trailer for Captain Marvel 2 will be released. However, if the movie does end up coming out during the MCU's Phase 5, we could see some promotional material as early as 2021, should the sequel hit theaters in 2022. Again, we'll have to at least wait until the movie begins production to figure this out. There's a chance that the sequel won't hit theaters until after 2022. If Marvel and Disney follow the path of the first Captain Marvel trailer, we could see another September full-length trailer drop like we did in 2018 for the first movie.

24 Who directed Captain Marvel and who will direct Captain Marvel 2?

Captain Marvel was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The directing duo are best-known for Half Nelson, Sugar, It's Kind of a Funny Story, and Mississippi Grind. In a recent interview, Boden and Fleck revealed they were surprised by how much free rein Marvel Studios gave them while crafting the Carol Danvers standalone movie. Fleck says that the studio only really had a few basic things they wanted in the movie. He explains.

"When we came aboard, basically Marvel said, 'Here's what we want. We want a movie set in the '90s, we want a young Nick Fury with two eyes, and we want some Skrulls in this movie.'"

It sounds like Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were offered a lot of creative freedom when working on the movie. Boden says that they wanted to take Captain Marvel in a weirder direction, but thought the studio might not want that. She says, "we were encouraged to make it more weird, and that was really fun." This seems to be the attitude that a lot of filmmakers have had when working with Marvel Studios and bodes well for the future of Captain Marvel. The first screenplay has quite a few names credited, including Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, along with Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch. While not confirmed, it seems like the directing duo may be asked to come back since Marvel Studios likes to keep working with the same collaborators and for the fact that they had so much creative freedom to flesh out the Carol Danvers character for her big screen debut.

23 Who is Captain Marvel?

Who is Captain Marvel?

Captain Marvel was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan back in the late 1960s. Carol Danvers first appeared as an officer in the United States Air Force and a colleague of The Kree superhero Mar-Vell in Marvel Super-Heroes #13. She later became the first incarnation of Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel #1 in 1977. In addition to Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel, the character has also been called Binary and Warbird. Danvers gained her powers after her DNA was fused with Mar-Vell's during an explosion.

Carol Danvers has been called one of the most powerful superheroes of all time. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has confirmed that she is the most powerful character to have appeared in an MCU project so far, which is really saying something. She has superhuman strength, power of flight, endurance, stamina, physical durability, a limited precognitive "seventh sense," and a "perfectly amalgamated human/Kree physiology that rendered her resistant to most toxins and poisons."

22 Who plays Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel?

Carol Danvers Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson

Academy Award winning actress Brie Larson portrayed Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel and she will no doubt be back for Captain Marvel 2. Larson won the Best Actress Award in 2015 for her portrayal of Joy "Ma" Newsome in the movie Room. She was originally skeptical of taking on such a big role with an immense amount of pressure surrounding it, but later accepted and started her intense training. In preparation for the first movie, Larson undertook judo, boxing, and wrestling training for nine months, and trained with service personnel at the Nellis Air Force Base. She has shared multiple videos on social media showing off her training and it appears that she worked extra hard to get ready for the massive undertaking of the Captain Marvel role.

There were a number of other actresses rumored to be playing Carol Danvers on the big screen, including Bryce Dallas Howard, Katheryn Winnick, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, Katee Sackhoff, and Shailene Woodley. After her Academy Award win in 2016, speculation about Brie Larson really started to take hold. Now, Larson is proud of the work and is excited to see fans react to her version of the character in the upcoming sequel.

18 What was Captain Marvel doing in Avengers 4?

Captain Marvel in Avengers 4

Carol Danvers was introduced to Black Widow and Captain America during the post-credit scene from Captain Marvel. She showed up answering Nick Fury's distress call, much to the surprise of Cap and Natasha Romanoff. In Avengers 4, she is with the whole team and leads the first strike on Thanos, where she initially butts heads with some of the original Avengers. She leads them to The Mad Titan, which is when Thor beheads him. From there, Carol Danvers is largely absent from Avengers 4, due to her commitments in keeping the galaxy safe from evil. She does end up coming back during the climactic final battle to help everyone take down Thanos once and for all. Danvers was able to single-handedly take down the Mad Titan's massive ship, which gave the rest of the team time to catch up.

17 What will Captain Marvel 2 be about?

Captain Marvel 2 plot

Marvel Studios has done their best to keep just about everything they can about Captain Marvel 2 from leaking. However, there are bound to be some leaks in the coming months. With that being said, the sequel could take place after the events of Avengers 4, or we could see the character in the past as she tries to help Talos and the rest of the Skrulls find a new home. It would be a good excuse to bring Ben Mendelsohn back into the cast.

Either way, Captain Marvel 2 will more than likely be a huge hit like the first installment. Seeing Carol Danvers in the past works just as well as the present MCU timeline, though a lot of fans may be interested to see what the character was up before the events of Avengers 4. Should we see Danvers in the past, there's a good chance we could see her come into contact with the Guardians of the Galaxy at some point, or maybe even just Peter Quill before he becomes the Star-Lord that everybody knows and loves. There is a lot of room to connect to the Guardians franchise, but Marvel Studios has said that they're shying away from the big team-up movies for the time being.

16 What are The Kree?

The Kree in captain Marvel

The Kree are "scientifically and technologically advanced militaristic alien race." They hail from the planet Hala in the Large Magellanic Cloud. So far, they have been featured in Guardians of the Galaxy and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, but Captain Marvel will give us a better idea about them. The Kree were introduced in Fantastic Four #65 (1967) and they were created by Marvel Comics legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The alien race was extensively featured in the very first Captain Marvel comic book and they are the reason that Carol Danvers has her powers. Obviously, the Kree will have to have a place in Captain Marvel 2 just as they did in Captain Marvel.

15 Who are The Skrulls?

The Skrulls in Captain Marvel

The Skrulls are a group of extraterrestrial shapeshifters who were first introduced in Fantastic Four #2. Like the Kree, the Skrulls were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Millions of years ago, the Celestials performed genetic experiments on the reptilian ancestors of the Skrulls, resulting in three branches of Skrulls: The Prime, the Deviants and the Eternals. Skrulls fit under the Deviant branch due to their shapeshifting abilities. Later on, they were involved in the huge Kree-Skrull War, which even had members of the Avengers getting involved in the comics.

MCU fans waited a long time to see the Skrulls on the big screen, so Captain Marvel was already going to be special for that reason alone. However, Marvel Comics fans were thrown for a loop when it was revealed that the Skrulls were actually good. Talos may have come off like a villain, but there was a major plot twist. The sequel could show how Carol Danvers helped them find a new home.

14 Will Yon-Rogg be in Captain Marvel 2?

In the comics, Yon-Rogg is a military leader, just like the movie. He first appeared in Marvel Superheroes #12 and was created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan. Jude Law starred in Captain Marvel as Yon-Rogg, who turned out to be a pretty evil character. He was the commander of Star Force and had unwavering loyalty to the Kree people, which wasn't always the best thing for him or the people around him.

Yon-Rogg considered Carol Danvers to be his protege and he could easily show up in Captain Marvel 2, since Danvers let him live. It would not be surprising to see Law back as the character, but it will really depend on when the sequel takes place. Plus, Marvel Studios may want to bring in a new villain.

13 Will Nick Fury be in the second Captain Marvel movie?

Young Nick Fury in Captain Marvel

Samuel L. Jackson came back to reprise his role of Nick Fury in Captain Marvel. We were able to see a young Fury in the movie, thanks to the de-aging technology. Seeing the character have such a large part in the first installment was pretty great for comic book fans who enjoy seeing Jackson as the iconic character. While we could obviously see Fury in Captain Marvel 2, it doesn't seem likely at this time.

From the looks of Captain Marvel, it looks like Nick Fury knows how powerful Carol Danvers is and will only call on her when it is absolutely necessary. However, Danvers did seem pretty distraught over the fact that Fury was Decimated, so there may have been more time for them to develop a relationship in the past. It's possible that the sequel could explore this. Plus, she may have had to go back and pickup Goose, who was left with Fury.

12 Will Agent Phil Coulson be in the next Captain Marvel 2?

Along with Nick Fury, MCU fans were able to see a young Agent Phil Coulson in Captain Marvel. The announcement of his return was met with great excitement by MCU fans who had been mourning his on-screen death. Since the first movie went back to the 1990s, we were able to see Coulson and Fury working together, showing Coulson as the "new guy" and before he became "crusty and jaded." Clark Gregg could end up becoming a part of the Captain Marvel 2 cast, but it would more than likely depend on the Nick Fury storyline, along with the rest of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

11 Will Mar-Vell be in Captain Marvel 2?

The lineage of Captain Marvel can be a bit confusing. Carol Danvers was introduced as Ms. Marvel in the late 1970s and wasn't called Captain Marvel until 2012. Before Danvers, there was another Captain Marvel, who was the Kree hero known as Mar-Vell introduced in 1967. In the comics, he was tasked with spying on Earth and ended up falling in love with it. However, in another twist, Mar-Vell was something completely different in the movie.

It was originally believed that Jude Law was taking on the Mar-Vell role, but that wasn't the case. Instead, the role went to Annette Benning, who doubled as the Supreme Intelligence. Kevin Feige says it was important to swap the gender of the character to push Carol Danvers' development. Benning's character appeared to Danvers as rebel Kree scientist Mar-Vell. There is a good chance that Benning could be back for the sequel.

10 Will Ronan the Accuser be in the next Captain Marvel 2?

Ronan the Accuser in Captain Marvel

Actor Lee Pace portrays Ronan the Accuser in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and was first introduced on the big screen in James Gunn's 2014 movie Guardians of the Galaxy. MCU fans were pretty excited to see that the Supreme Accuser of the Kree Empire was going to have a part in Captain Marvel. Ronan was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, and he first appeared in Fantastic Four #65 (1967). He has been an adversary of the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Fantastic Four.

In Guardians of the Galaxy, Ronan is depicted as an avid Kree fanatic whose family was killed in the Kree-Nova War. He later refuses to "heed his Empire's peace treaty with the Nova Corps of Xandar and embarks on a genocidal campaign against all Xandarians." He then pairs with Thanos to unknowingly gather an Infinity Stone and reneges on the deal. He is later obliterated by the Guardians, which is why fans were happy to see him back in the 1990s. Ronan the Accuser could show up in Captain Marvel 2, if the story takes place in the past.

9 Will Korath the Pursuer be in Captain Marvel 2?

Djimon Hounsou plays Korath the Pursuer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and like Ronan the Accuser, he appeared on the big screen in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. Korath first appeared in the comics in Quasar #32 (1992), and was created by Mark Gruenwald and Greg Capullo. The character is a geneticist, who founded and led the Pursuer Project, and was also a member of Starforce. He worked under Ronan the Accuser and was later killed by Drax the Destroyer. Also, like Ronan, Captain Marvel 2 would have to take place in the past in order for him to come back.

8 Will Talos be in Captain Marvel 2?

Talos is played by Ben Mendelsohn in Captain Marvel. The Skrull villain was first introduced in The Incredible Hulk #418 (1994) and was created by Peter David and artist Gary Frank. In the comics, he is known as Talos the Untamed and the first movie made some pretty big changes to the character. For one, he was not able to shapeshift in the comics and was considered to be a mutant amongst the other Skrulls. With that being said, he was given superhuman strength instead.

In Captain Marvel, Talos did have the shapeshifting abilities and they were very powerful. The shape-shifting ability of the Skrulls makes them particularly formidable, especially when Mendelsohn's character was infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. As mentioned above, the character was not actually a villain this time around. A big portion of Captain Marvel 2 could see Carol Danvers working with Talos to find a home. Additionally, if the sequel takes place in the present, we could see him too, since he was in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

7 Will Maria Rambeau be in the next Captain Marvel movie?

Lashana Lynch plays Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel and is considered to be a top-notch Air Force pilot and one of Carol Danvers' best friends. She made her comic debut in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 (1982) and was created by Roger Stern and artist John Romita Jr. Rambeau is also known for being the second person to take on the Captain Marvel name, which could have big implications on Captain Marvel 2. It seems that further exploration of her relationship would have to come into play for the sequel after it was built up so much in the first installment, especially with her daughter Monica in the picture.
