After delivering an Oscar-nominated performance as Martin Luther King in Selma last year, David Oyelowo is taking on a completely different role in the first trailer for the harrowing true story drama Captive, co starring Kate Mara. The plot is adapted from the non-fiction book titled Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero written by Ashley Smith with Stacey Mattingly. Her story captivated the nation, showing how one inspirational book turned a terrifying ordeal into a life-altering experience.

Captive, based on a miraculous true story, is the dramatic, thrilling, and spiritual journey of Ashley Smith and Brian Nichols. After being taken hostage by Brian in her own apartment, Ashley turns to Rick Warren's inspirational book, The Purpose Driven Life, for guidance. In reading from the book, Ashley not only finds purpose in her own life, but helps Brian find a more peaceful resolution to a harrowing situation.

The supporting cast is rounded out by Mimi Rogers, Michael K. Williams, Leonor Varela, E. Roger Mitchell, Michael Mercaldi, Kevin J. O'Connor and Matt Lowe. Jerry Jameson (Safe Harbor) directs this drama, which was picked up by Paramount Pictures earlier this year. Check out the first trailer for Captive, in theaters September 18.
